jazz for the new-millennium b-boy (and girl!). straight up.
The 100% improvised beats, bass and music of Freesoul Sessions is back live on stage at London's Jazz Cafe. Everything you hear is created especially for that moment, nothing is prepared or preconceived with the music bringing together soul, funk, jazz, afro-latin and dancefloor in one big party mash-up. This month we're very happy to welcome and introduce guest vocalist Sandra Nkake from Paris for an exclusive spot with us. Sandra's one of Europe's most exciting vocalists - she's featured with house producers Black Joy (check the restless soul remix of 'Metal Bossa') and in MdCL's own words she's "one of the most exciting and innovative improvising vocalists I've heard in a long time". This is going to be a Freesoul you're not going to want to miss!

Freesoul Sessions was created by Mark de Clive-Lowe in London, 2004. The concept of the project is simple - MdCL armed with MPC and keyboards is joined by a rotating cast of top soul, jazz, hip hop and beat-artists coming together in the spirit of total improvisation. Stylistically rooted in the sound of West London, Freesoul Sessions does what has never been done before - each and every time, the live show is totally unique and a one-off experience for the musicians and the audience. The first thing the audience hears is the metronome click of the MPC as MdCL builds beats from nothing, building on the beats with bass lines and keys as the other musicians join him in improvising beat-centric music laced by the vocalists who complete the session's asthetic.
Freesouls first residency was at the Notting Hill Arts Club and the project now holds a monthly residency at London's Jazz Cafe. Over the past six months, the clubnite has featured MdCL joined by Bembé Segué, Kaidi Tatham (Bugz in the Attic), Marcina Arnold, Sammy Figueroa (Raices/Miles Davis), Dave Okumu (Jade Fox), Michelle Escoffery (Kindred Spirit), Lyric L, Rasiyah, Richard Spaven (PPP/Ty), Sharlene Hector (Reel People), Cherie Mathieson (Antipodean Records) plus spontaneous guests including Jaguar Wright, Jon B, Lenny Castro (Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder) and plenty more along with DJs Chris Cox (Thisinformation/Antipodean), Dego (4Hero), Domu, Benji B and Uprocks Adam Rock.
Freesoul Sessions has also been taken abroad to Paradiso (Amsterdam), Akbank Jazz Festival (Istanbul), Club Aquarius (Zagreb), The Room (Kyoto Jazz Massive's club, Tokyo), Moscow, Puerto Rico, Miami WMC as well as in residence in London at the Jazz Café and at the Montreux Jazz Festival Atlanta 2005.
Freesoul Sessions EP1, 2 and 3 are out now on Antipodean Records, vol.1 CD soon come. The improvised sessions captured live on record and pressed up on limited edition 12s and digital EPs.
