About me: Freckles' Friends is a 501c3 non-profit organization that is raising funds to build a no-kill pet shelter for our rural area of middle Tennessee. (No-Kill being defined as we will not kill an adoptable pet.) In addition, we are working to promote spay/neuter as the only solution to pet overpopulation that is such an enormous problem in our area. We organized Freckles' Friends in May of 2006 to work towards a better world for our pets and we are steadily growing. It has been a struggle to get community support but it seems that the tide is turning in our favor and we are starting to feel that there is a light at the end of the tunnel as we gain volunteers and donors. Unfortunately, this area is very depressed economically, the county population is only 18,000 with 17% being below poverty level (as of 1999 statistics but if anything, that percentage has grown). Only 65% of the adults over 25 have finished high school. We need the help of people outside our area if we are going to be able to truly make a difference in educating people about the need to spay and neuter and to build a decent, progressive shelter.

We are an all volunteer organization with no paid staff. All donations are greatly appreciated and will be used to help care for animals in our community.
We are happy to let you know that grant funding has been received from the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. This funding will allow us to bring the Humane Association of Wilson County's Mobile Spay Station to our county once each month in 2008, spaying & neutering around 300 pets in low-income families. To have a pet neutered at the spay station, clients must show proof of participation in a program such as Food Stamps, Public Housing, Disability or Medicaid.
We still need to help a lot more pet owners who do not qualify for the spay station, yet cannot afford to spay or neuter their pets. Pet abandonment is a huge problem in our area and many people call us because a pet was "dropped off" at their house. They usually already have several pets and can't afford vet care for another. We have received some grant funding from the Greg Biffle Foundation for our low-cost spay/neuter voucher program which provides spay/neuter surgeries at a low co-pay of $10 per cat or $20 per dog at either of our 2 local vets offices. This funding has nearly depleted and we are getting more and more calls each week. If you can help spay or neuter one of these pets, send a donation to Freckles Friends, PO Box 25, Liberty, TN 37095. Write "Spay Voucher Fund" on your check and 100% of your donation will go towards spay/neuter surgeries.
