BOSTON - Francis Phan, aka p-franchise, is one of Boston's premier music producers in Hip Hop, R&B and Spoken Word music and remixer of House dance music. He is the inaugural recipient of the Producer of The Year Award at the 2006 New England Urban Music Awards, which was hosted by the Berklee Performance Arts Center on April 15, 2006 in Boston.
Francis is production partners with rap artist Omega Red, who together form the Jugganautz. They are recipients of Producer Company of The Year Award at the 2006 New England Urban Music Awards. Francis plays keyboards for Iyeoka Okoawo's Black & Blues Tribe and has produced Iyeoka's critically acclaimed album Black & Blues and Ayisha Knight’s album Until, which Boston Globe’s Steve Morse described as a “multicultural marvel”.
Francis' work has recently gone international with production of Iyeoka's single "For Rwanda", which featured on civil rights former US Ambassador to the United Nations Andew Young's documentary "Rwanda Rising" which lays out hope for a united Rwanda.
A composer and classically trained pianist since the age of eight, Francis produces music out his Boston based recording studio facility, dubbed the Slingshot. Francis is as versed an engineer as a musician. Francis is a former “Golden Ears” student of Grammy nominated mix engineer David Moulton.
Francis has degrees in electrical engineering and biomedical engineering where he did his thesis work in psychoacoustics, neural networks and speech recognition. His research was published for a graduate level textbook by CRC press. He has also developed audio software for Cakewalk, iCast and Harmonix Music, where he has credits for the Sony PlayStation 2 game “Frequency”. Francis was also a former executive officer for SonicBids, an online music agency.
Francis is presently a faculty adjunct at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy teaching music production. For 2007 Francis is working on album projects for Omega Red, Iyeoka Okoawo, Ray Greene, Vudoo Soul and Bryonn Bain.
