"Beginning" by Golden Pastime
- Featured in Episode 1 -
Arin: I met Andrew when I was seventeen years old. He had a recording studio within walking distance from the High School, so I would cut class to go over and work on the 4-song album of a band I was in called Metagalaxxy. Andrew blew me away with his engineering abilities and started teaching me all kinds of stuff about audio recording, and even a bit about music theory. In New York, we collaborated on the writing, shooting, and music of a couple short films. And when Susan and I started Four Eyed Monsters, he helped us out big time developing the project. Episode 1 shows a little bit about that, so it seemed to make sense to have Andrew's music in the episode. Not to mention, we were scrambling for music for the first episode and Andrew is the only person that can make amazing music in just a few hours, so we asked him to create a song. He iChatted us the file with the disclaimer that he may have gone overboard and thought we wouldn't like it, and we put it in the FCP and watched the episode, and loved the way it worked. He hadn't even seen the edit, but somehow, the length of the song and musical changes came out just right with the edit. Andrew decided to loosley name the song after the episode and call it "Beginning," and add it to his solo project called "Golden Pastime," which has an album due out sometime next year. Golden Pastime also provided several songs that are in our Feature Film called "Four Eyed Monsters," which is still in the process of securing distribution. You can hear some of the songs in the Film, as well as a few more recent Golden Pastime tracks on his MySpace profile.
"Bird and Sword" by National Eye
- Featured in Episode 2 -
Susan: We had a request to be interviewed on a Podcast called "WHYME," so we decided to check out their show to scope things out a bit. We were looking through the list of shows and saw they had an interview with the Spinto Band, and decided to listen to the episode where they are interviewed.
Arin: The Spinto Band mentioned being friends with National Eye and then had the host play "Bird and Sword," which we thought was cool because, like The Spinto Band's song "Mandy," it also was using a mandolin.
Susan: So we googled National Eye and discovered their label "Park the Van Records," who's home page streams non-stop music from their label. We found ourselves just going through their site and letting the music play while we were working on other things, and some of the music started to grow on us. We forgot about National Eye for a bit until we kept hearing that song on the "Park the Van" site and, eventually, we realized that we really, really like that song, so we got permission from the label to use it in Episode 2, which we thought went great with the trip down memory lane that features my parents. National Eye has an album coming out in a few months, so check out their MySpace profile for more info, and keep an eye out in the iTunes Music Store for them.
"Smile" by Stone Jack Jones
- Featured in Episode 3 -
Susan: We got a friend request from "Stone Jack Jones" and started listening to their song "Smile" over and over again while we were finishing up Episode 2. It became obvious we were going to want to use the song in an episode, so we sent them a message. At first they were unsure, but then they got back to us again after seeing episode 2 and understood more about what we are doing, and said "Absolutely."
Arin: A lot of people have mentioned they really liked this song and the quality of music we've been able to use has inspired us to start this music profile, to allow people to find out more about each musician we use in the Video Podcast. Check out their profile to find out more about Stone Jack Jones and the album they have due out pretty soon.
"1989 Toyota Camry" by Kevin Brewersdorf
- Featured in Episode 3.5 -
Kevin Brewersdorf is an amazing artist and composer. His website contains hours of entertainment including photos, essays, videos and more. Definitely check it out! Kevin is currently working on the score for the new film by Joe Swangerg called LOL. Kevin is also making a video podcast that contains music and short videos based on the film.
"We Are the Ones We're Waiting For" by Strangers Die Every Day
- Featured in Episode 3.5 -
Strangers Die everyday are the way bands should be, violins that rock out.
"My Pride" by Monkey Casanellas
- Featured in Episode 4 -
Arin: I thought this song sounded like it was being sung by a 12 year old boy and fell in love with it.
Susan: I thought it sounded like a some women singing a pretty standard folky song.
Arin: Susan doesn't appreciate this kind of music but I think its rawness is it's appeal. And I like it even though I found out it's not a 12 year old boy, but how amazing would that be right?
Susan: The lyrics are an obvious dead give away, no 12 year old is going to sing about, "being with you last night"... and "cigarettes..."
Arin: The point is I think it worked great in the episode and that it's awesome this girl that won't even accept our friend request because she seems to have forgotten about her myspace profile is actually getting substantial exposure because we put her music in the episode.
Susan: An unrequited collaboration.
"The Day I Dies" by Gingerbread Patriots
- Featured in Episode 5 -
Susan: We got a message on MySpace about how this guy and his girlfriend watch our episodes on the phone together and start them at the same time so that they can hear each other react. Then three links to some songs. All of which were completely in line with the music we were looking for in the video podcast.
Arin: We almost used 2 songs of theirs and may come back to using more of their music but the edit ended up only needing one, "the day I dies". The awesome thing about collaborating with gingerbread patriots is we needed a mix with no vocals to put in the first half of the episode where there is a bunch of dialog and they had all the files they needed to do that right on their computer at home and a few hours after we asked for it, there was an mp3 in our in box.
Susan: I wasn't joking when I said they're my new favorite, band.
"Moriarti," "Collars Up" and "Prolepsis" by Paper Jones
- Featured in Episode 7 -
susan: so I watch the suicide girls podcast, eye candy with good music. It was the episode with "Kokeshi" and the song they played "moriati" was amazing. Arin and I were floored. At the end of the episode it stated that the music was by Paper Jones. We went to his site and sent him an email telling him how much we like his song and explaining that we did a podcast too and that we'd love to use his music. He sent us a CD with six songs and they were all terrific. We ended up using 3 just in this one episode. He's out in L.A. now but says he may move to New York City. We're hoping he does so we can hang. He's coming out with a new album pretty soon and you can purchase his current album on CD Baby.
"Number 1 Summer Jam" by Me, Myself, and the I's
- Featured in Episode 0 -
Susan: There is an episode of the Video Podcast that a lot of people haven't seen called "Episode 0." It started out as an interntal episode to help us understand what the scope of the whole series was going to be. And we even showed it to a few distribution companies, trying to get them interested in what we are doing for potential funding, and a distribution deal, but to no avail. When Apple announced the video-capable iPod on October 12th, we decided we needed to benefit from that hype, so we immediately released episode 0 in iTunes, and on our MySpace blog, as sort of a teaser for the series, and to get all the technology kinds worked out. It worked. We got a lot of press that helped episode 1 get the exposure it needed to make this whole video podcast thing feel like it was working. But the song in episode 0, well... this music is very deat to us. The song is called "Number 1 Summer Jam," and its's by a friend we met through MySpace named Drew, who lives in Texas. This music means a lot to us because we feel like it's a great audio representation of how our attempt to get our movie out there has been a fumbling ride filled with a lot of mistakes. In the song, some of the riffs are just barely pulled off, and the song struggles to keep itself together, and we really identify with that. And that is why we used it in this episode. We think of this as kind of the video podcast theme song.
"Oh Mandy" by The Spinto Band
- Featured in the Four Eyed Monsters Trailer -
Arin: When I discovered podcasting in the March '05 Wired arcticle that profiled Adam Curry, I immediately started searching for Film-related audio podcasts and found Jump Cut Radio. I begin listening to his show on the subway and while running errands in New York, and started to understand the appeal of podcasting, the personal nature, the intimacy of having a friend to talk to you with very up-close, in-your-ear, audio. The show was about music and film, the two main things I'm interested in, and he even had pretty good taste in music. One of the songs he played was called "Oh Mandy," by Spinto Band. I got the band's website from the shownotes and immediately put "Oh Mandy" on our playlist I was listening to while editing our trailer to Four Eyed Monsters. Even though we didn't have permission, I couldn't help but put it in the timeline of our new trailer we were working on, and it just fit perfectly. We are still in the process of getting permission to keep using that song in our trailer, but hopefully they will get back to us soon. If you discover them through us and buy their album on iTunes, like we did, or in a story, it doesn't hurt to send them a message saying you found out about them through us and are now supporting them financially.
