Ross's Interests
General
I'm an absolutely fiendish home chef, and I'm always trying to learn new things. I really like to just sit down with a cookbook, read it cover to cover, and then try and figure out how the hell to do what they do. It's incredibly rewarding. I read tons, and I'll read almost anything, as long as it's good. No James Patterson here, please. Donald Hall-John Steinbeck-James Ellroy-Elmore Leonard-Carl Hiaasen-Dave Eggers-Sarah Vowell-Michael Chabon-Nathaniel Philbrick-Erik Larsen-Gabriel Garcia Marquez-Paulo Coelho-Tom Adelman-Jim Harrison-Graham Greene-John Irving-the list could go one for a while. I like baseball more than is probably healthy, as is obvious during a conversation of more than a few minutes with me. I can talk about a lot of different stuff, but it all comes back to baseball. Have eight hours of free time? Give me a call and I'll bore the living crap out of you. =)

Books
Bring on the year of the classics!!! So far I've chewed up The Power and the Glory, The Three Musketeers, and Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Goal=20 classics in one year. Oh yeah, time for Ross to feel smart again.
Ok, so Ross' List of Books Read in 2007
The Power and the Glory (Graham Greene), The Three Musketeers (Alexandre Dumas), The Regulators (Stephen King), Game of Shadows (Mark Fainaru-Wada), Sun Over Breda (Arturo Perez-Reverte), Zodiac (Robert Graysmith), The Yiddish Policeman's Union (Michael Chabon), Don't Eat This Book (Morgan Spurlock), The Good Guy (Dean Koontz), The Overlook (Michael Connelly), Alas, Babylon (Pat Frank), The Shadow of the Wind (Carlos Ruiz Zafon), Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Heart Shaped Box (Joe Hill), The Secret Servant (Daniel Silva), Helter Skelter, The Intruders (Michael Marshall), The Natural (Bernard Malamud), The Sportswriter (Richard Ford). Obviously the whole classics thing isn't going as well as I hoped. I'm going to blame.......YOU. Thanks for taking it.

Heroes
Rick Bayless. The man moves to mexico in his late teens, goes from town to town learning cuisine for about ten years, then moves back to Chicago and opens his own restaurant--Topolobompo. He becomes a champion of fresh foods, even starts his own organic foods company--Frontera. Gets his own show on PBS called Mexico One Plate at a Time. This is by far the most origional and creative cooking show to ever be on TV. First, he takes you to the area of Mexico that is regionally specific of the dish and walks around the markets and the street vendors and shows you how the dish he's about to prepare is created locally. HE takes you to restaurants and street vendors and talks about ingredients and the history of the region. He then takes you back to his studio and prepares the dish as easily and simply as possible so that all the people who are afraid to create real, authentic Mexican food don't get intimidated. My favorite episode is the one where he went to Frida Kahlo's home and talked about the parties she and Diego Montoya would have, toured the home, the kitchens, and the whole area around the home, and then showed how to create the exact kinds of food that they would have eaten. It's absolutely brilliant.

I work a completely meaningless retail job, but absolutely love it. I'm into books, music, movies, and cooking. I hate Bon Jovi, high school girls that think Starbucks is the shizznit, and Dan "DaVinci Code" Brown. He can burn in the high, ass scorching flames of hell.

You are intelligent, witty, a bit geeky and have great power and responsibility.
Who I'd like to meet: *Zach Braff-to thank him for the inspiration. I owe him one.
*Bob Dylan-just to share a cup of coffee.
*Neil Gaiman-I was a huge fan before he wrote novels, and now I'm just a junkie. Thanks for the stories, but I'd really like it if you would stop putting out all the crap lately.
*Dustin Hoffman-Do I really need to say why? The guy is an unbelievable actor. If you haven't seen Straw Dogs, check it out. Be sure your couch has handles.
Hmm let's see...Radiohead, Rage, Kanye, The Black Keys, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, The Octopus Project, Wilco, The Raconteurs, Iron and Wine, CHROMEO, Dr. Dog (who's also playing in Birmingham in September), Gnarles Barkley, Bloc Party just to name a few. Ya know, if you like that sort of thing. I would love to start a garden but I don't even know where to start. Good for you on the carbon thing, though. The planet thanks you.
Sure, but where's the mystery? I am in love with Band of Horses, fo real. And I went to Radiohead last week and it was awesome. I'm in talks with some folks about a Lollapalooza road trip extravaganza, you should seriously consider it. There music coming at me from across the hall is Hollaback Girl. I love my job. What do you love?
I'm very much alive, although Tuscaloosa is absolutely sucking the soul right out of me. This town is an armpit, I tell you. But I'm glad I saw your message today because that Ben Folds song put a smile on my face when I didn't think that would be possible. So, yay - you light up my life.
I'm not sure hommie. I want to go. I like a ton of the smaller groups playing but I can't commit just yet. I wish they sold just day passes. I want to go see MIA and My Morning Jacket amongst others. holla
