The Fine Arts Building, an historic artist’s haven since 1898, continues to draw local inspiration. Over fifty artists have recently flocked to one of the few remaining Chicago buildings designed specifically for working artists. On the Second Friday of every month the public is invited to tour ten stories of this National Landmark from 4:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. and visit individual working studios and galleries. Four galleries and over fifteen artists’ studios will be featured as FAB Studios, a flexible collaborative collective that will cyclically highlight the wealth of visual and performing arts talent resident in the Fine Arts Building for the public on the Second Friday of every month.
The National Landmark building’s motto: "All passes - Art alone endures" permeates the halls of the Fine Arts Building. Bronze cast elevator doors and ornate clocks are among the building’s original features. Murals painted by resident artists in the early twentieth century still circle the tenth floor atrium. A Venetian courtyard garden can be viewed from many artists’ studios in addition to the beautiful lake views from the Michigan Avenue studios. There is no other building in Chicago where the public can enjoy the visual arts, music, dance, theater and alternative healing arts while exploring an architectural treasure.
The myriad of columned entryways are as diverse as the artistic endeavors undertaken within. Visual artists work in a variety of contemporary and traditional styles. Musicians practice, teach and audition with both the classical and jazz tradition well represented. Musical instruments are refurbished, bought and sold. Dance and drama companies plan and hold performances on site and around the city. Notable architectural and graphic design firms add their unique character to the mix. Several types of bodywork as well as yoga attend to physical needs, while dance instruction in ballroom styles adds a lighthearted air of romance to the building after dusk.
Join us for Second Friday Open Studios and gain a deeper knowledge of the arts through a special arts environment whose character fosters intimate discussions between the artist and building visitor.
