Named after an unrefined robbery technique in which vehicles (or other bulky projectiles) are crashed through the glass and steel security of a storefront, the title of Elucid’s new mixtape, “Smash N Grab”, could just as easily refer to the project’s method of music-making. After compulsively snatching up segments from any song—regardless of genre—that caught his ear, the Queens-born/Brooklyn-living rapper pummels the pirated music until it belongs as much to him as it does to the original artist. By combining his harshly poetic vocals with production stripped from the likes of Johnny Cash, M.I.A., Ratatat, The Black Lips, and Bjork, Elucid has created a unique and frighteningly good mixtape that glints with the beauty of shattered glass -- after a cinder block has been hoisted through it, of course. As avant-garde as this project is, its star is unquestionably Elucid. With vivid lyrics, darkly streetwise wit, and a subversive political bent, he makes the menagerie of music yanked from divergent sources sound cohesive. “Middle finger through the window of my suicide door/ fuck the poor, broken glass on the condom” Elucid says on his remake of Kenna’s “Out of Control.” With “Smash N Grab”, he proves himself one of the most exciting new rappers anyone is liable to hear anytime soon. His debut album, “Save Yourself” will be released on Loosie Music in late 2008.
