The dream listener project is a mobile intervention in the street that takes place from 25 November 2006 to 25 November 2007. For one year Karen Spencer has written her dreams on cardboard, gone out into the street, and held the cardboard dream in front of her. Made visible and displayed in this manner, the dream elicits a response. A dialogue begins with people in the street, opening the possibility of entering into the dream world of others. She asks the public, did you dream last night? Tell me your dream…
Situated in the street and using found cardboard to communicate her dreams, Karen’s interventions imply a direct relationship with people who live their lives on the street. The artist has also spent the year building relationships with members of the St-James Drop-In Centre in Montréal, a day centre for people who are at risk because of one or a combination of the following factors: homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, personality disorder, or intellectual handicap. Karen’s interventions have taken place in Montréal, Chicoutimi, and North Bay, Ontario, where she has shared, collected, and listened to dreams.
The Centre de recherche urbaine de Montréal was commissioned by Karen Spencer to create an original audio piece as part of the dream listener project.
dream listener: an audiobook in three movements combines excerpts of dreams told to Karen with narration of her own experiences and encounters with people on the street and at the St-James Drop-In Centre. By turns poignant, surreal, comic and revelatory, the audiobook is both a document of Karen’s experience and an original composition in itself. The CD will be available at the launch for a suggested donation of $10, all proceeds going to the St-James Drop-In Centre.
Nous sommes tous de beaux rêveurs
Le projet porteur de rêves est une intervention mobile qui se déroule dans la rue sur une période d’un an; initié le 25 novembre 2006, il prendra fin le 25 novembre prochain. Pendant un an, Karen Spencer est descendue dans la rue avec des panneaux de carton sur lesquels étaient inscrits ses rêves. S’ensuit alors un dialogue avec les gens de la rue, offrant la possibilité de pénétrer dans l’univers onirique des autres. Elle demandait au public: «Avez-vous rêvé la nuit dernière? Racontez-moi votre rêve»…
Puisque l’intervention a lieu dans la rue et parce que le carton utilisé pour communiquer les rêves est récupéré, il s’établit une relation directe entre les actions et les gens qui vivent dans la rue. Karen a également consacré l’année à développer des liens avec les gens du Centre de jour St-James à Montréal où viennent ceux qui sont à risque en raison d’un ou d’une combinaison des facteurs suivants : itinérance, maladie mentale, consommation abusive d’alcool ou d’autres drogues, troubles de la personnalité ou déficience intellectuelle. Les interventions se sont déroulées à Montréal, Chicoutimi et North Bay, Ontario, où elle a partagé, compilé et écouté des rêves.
Suite à la commande de Karen Spencer, le Centre de recherche urbaine de Montréal a crée une composition audio dans le cadre de porteur de rêves.
dream listener: an audiobook in three movements combine des extraits de rêves qu’a recueilli Karen avec des narrations de rencontres avec des gens de la rue en cours de projet. À la fois poignant, surréel, comique et révélateur, ce livre audio constitue autant un document de l’expérience de Karen qu’une oeuvre originale. Le disque sera disponible au lancement - un don de 10 $ est suggéré; tous les profits seront remis au Centre St-James.
Biography
Montréal artist Karen Elaine Spencer has a masters degree in arts from UQAM and has presented her work on numerous occasions in Québec, Canada, Finland, Yugoslavia, Italy, and France. She is a wanderer, a loiterer, a rider of trains, a circulator of dreams. She takes the mundane events of ordinary life and mines these for their poetic underpinnings. Although Karen’s work has been presented in exhibition centres across Canada and Europe (recent exhibitions include votre rêve dans mon oreille at Lobe in Chicoutimi, lit de pain at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, and metro rider at La Centrale in Montréal), her favorite place of presentation is the street.
«Dans le cadre de ma recherche artistique, j’entreprends d’approfondir mon entendement de la nature éphémère des expériences quotidiennes et de re-situer celles-ci dans l’espace et le temps. Plus précisément, je cherche à subvertir les activités et les espaces auxquels on accorde un faible coefficient d’échange. J’ai toujours travaillé dans des sphères où est abordé le retrait d’une position sociale sécurisée. La maison de chambres de expect nothing (2000) était établie selon un rapport précaire à l’itinérance; le ramblin’ man (2001) ne cherchait à occuper aucun espace; loitererin’ (2003) se déroulait selon une relation délicate au territoire; et metro rider (2004) était en mouvement constant. The Centre de recherche urbaine de Montréal is a pseudo-arts organization, an independant publisher, an idea, an article of faith, but above all an artists’ collective dedicated to making art projects happen in the urban environment. The CRUMmies have come together because of shared interests and a belief in working collaboratively within the competitive and impersonal environment of the city. We all work within the identity of CRUM but we all also work without it, in our own personal practices and professional activities.
The CRUM is a shape-shifting, parasitic, self-sufficient and auto-financing model. When we work collaboratively with artists outside the organization it is because these artists and their projects share our values. We offer them the conviction that working together and pooling resources is a positive experience. We offer them exchange in kind of our combined professional experience in research and information services, writing, sound recording, and institutional, commercial and not-for-profit art systems.
In 2007 the CRUM adopted the Creative Commons licensing system for intellectual property produced through the collective. This is in keeping with our belief in shared resources and a free culture.
