STYLUS DJ AWARDS
COLLEGE RADIO SHOW OF THE YEAR ((( WEFUNK RADIO )))
WEFUNK RADIO is the college radio show I've been doing with Prof Groove since '96 on CKUT 90.3 in Montreal. We play a mix of funk, soul, original breaks and hiphop you don't hear on commercial radio... i'm talkin about mad throwbacks and that underground ish!
Visit our website www.wefunkradio.com to listen to HUNDREDS of archived shows. You can also catch us on iTunes Radio under "Hip Hop/Rap". Click on player below to listen to latest WEFUNK show.
The first time I heard hip-hop was when I moved from Hong Kong to Vancouver at age 11. Kids at school were passing me tapes by Run-DMC, Big Daddy Kane, BDP, etc etc. I was just vibing to the beat in the beginning, mouthing wordz that I didn't even know! When my English got better, I was influenced alot by the wave of conscious groups that emerged in the early 90s, like Public Enemy, X-Clan and Brand Nubian. That's why even up to this day I look for shit that bangs, but is also saying something that means something. Big up to legendary Vancouver radio show Krispy Bisket, a big inspiration for myself and a whole generation of Vancity hiphop headz.
WEFUNK RADIO (www.wefunkradio.com)
In '95 I moved to Montreal for university and met Professor Groove. The following year we started our show WEFUNK on CKUT 90.3fm. Alot of the hiphop at the time was heavily sample-based, so it seemed natural to play hiphop and the funk it sampled all in one show. They go together like roots and branches.
WEFUNK became real big in around 2001 when iTunes Radio starting streaming us. Suddenly I was playing hip-hop to listeners around the world, from Brazil to South Africa to Russia! We try to keep alot of older traxx in rotation (both in funk and hiphop) so people don't forget where the music comes from.
NOMADIC MASSIVE (www.nomadicmassive.ca)
In summer 2004, me and a couple of Montreal MCs and musicians were invited to perform at the Havana Hip-Hop Festival in Cuba. We formed the group NOMADIC MASSIVE and have been together since.
