Revolution Recap by Pri yon Joni


Musician since birth and DJ since the age of 11, Pri yon Joni, formerly known as DJ D-Tec, has been one to blend all the attributes of his musicianship into show stopping performances and creative productions. Keeping an eclectic style, yon Joni sets no boundaries in his production and performances; answering the question, “what kind of music does he do?” “Just one kind; good music.”

Currently active with electronic dance music, yon Joni has expanded his performances with a live vocalist by the name of Busoua, setting his DJ sets beyond your typical club night where production beyond the decks is showcased to its best. Unlike your typical commercial DJ, yon Joni sets out as a music evangalist, introducing new flavors to his mix, in a constant quest to play that next floor banging track. "Why should people come to your club," yon Joni says, "if you play what everybody else plays. Today's iPOD's can do that."

A turntablist at heart, yon Joni goes beyond the mix giving a show of trickery truly using the decks as musical instruments. In today’s digital world, he has expanded from the traditional turntables and has used the Pioneer CDJ’s as his tool’s to remix and create music live. Now along with Ableton Live, yon Joni has taken a step up utilizing live electronics including live synthesizers to his mix.

Pri yon Joni is also the founder, mentor, and director of the female DJ crew, the Sonic Crystals who in 2007, has opened for 3 world famous DJ’s within their first year (JJ Flores, MC Flipside, and DJ Victor R). The group was formed in the winter of 2006 and was premiered in the fall. After active performances in the Detroit area and appearances as far as Cleveland, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, and Minnesota, Pri yon Joni and the Sonic Crystals prepare a tour for 2008 that will bring new sounds across the cities. The Sonic Crystals have grown representing students as well as experienced female DJ's from Detroit, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Pensacola. On July 4, 2008, the "Story Tell Tour" will begin at Myth Nightclub in St. Paul, MN.

In the beginning of 2008, Pri yon Joni traveled across the border of the United States to share music beyond the "familiar" radio hits in a small town across the Detroit river known as, Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The town was more open minded to House sounds compared to Detroit, however, their exposure was only limited to the chart hits, since some of the local jockeys would only stick to the "familiar" hits. As a music evangelist, Pri yon Joni came into two nightclubs for 3 months, introducing new music and experimenting with a crowd that has been stuck in a "jockey comfort zone". "You gotta take risks," yon Joni says. "Success lies on the other side of the unfamiliar. It's either you give it your all or don't do it at all."

Unfortunately, his residency in Windsor was cut short. Not everyone was happy with his experimentive, unfamiliar style. A local jockey created a hostile, deceptive, and unprofessional situation which led to yon Joni leaving Windsor. His short residency was not a loss, however, for yon Joni returns to Club 22 in Shelby Twp. MI, for the summer of 2008. This year, he will testing out new DJ equipment in the market, controlling both video and music. His creativity is put to the test being the first DJ to test new hardware (Virtual DJ on time-coded CD's on Denon DN-S-3500's with an Ecler MIDI control mixer) in a major one-thousand capacity nightclub, who is infamous for their legendary 800+ regular Saturday attendance. With the growing retro theme, yon Joni embarks on a flashback set of dance music and DJ history, entering the relm of the 70's, 80's, and 90's at Metro-Detroit's number one retro nightclub, Club 22; in the vision of it's owner, former Detroit Red Wings professional hockey player, number 22, Dino Ciccarelli.

In the mean time, while a handful is happening with the nightclubs, Pri yon Joni find's the time to produce music and compilations. This year, yon Joni has and will continue releasing the mosts music he has ever done in any other year. The Captivate series, a blend of electro house and mixable dance music, is going into it's volume 4; only 6 months from the original release. Along with underground singles like "Sexy Asian Ladies", and remixes contracted to certain undisclosed labels, yon Joni's music will be reaching far and wide by the end of this year. Since performing at the official after party of the 2007 Movement, Detroit Electronic Music Festival, yon Joni grew away from the breakbeats and began his journey in the style of house music as well as the native Detroit genre of minimal techno. "I'll always love breaks, but I'm ready to play for the world."

Throughout the ride, behind every great artist, is a great mentor. And behind Pri yon Joni is DJ Marquis. Yon Joni grew up as a young student fascinated by the mixology of the radio mix show DJ's. One of the best one's he's heard was DJ Marquis. Eight years later, Pri yon Joni caught the ears of DJ Marquis and he took him under his wing. To this day, they still work together in production and performance.
