Divine Ratio is comprised of musicians from the VA Beach and NY areas. Their music is intense and emotional, foreign, yet strangely familiar, rhythmic and melodic. It is derived from influences and life experiences that are evident in the sound that these four musicians create.
Divine Ratio was formed as Release in 2000 by lead vocalist and guitarist/songwriter Bryan Knispel.
Bryan is a well-respected local musician whose credits include working with bands Soul Circle and Relief, along with his current side project Acoustic Sense.
Charles Gray, guitarist/songwriter and NY native, has co-founding credits with past bands Limbic, Fraction and Trichotomy (aka Rook).
Tripp Johnson is a well respected bassist and vocalist who additionally holds a BA in Drum Set Studies and Composition from the College of William and Mary.
Rounding out this dynamic group is drummer James Roman a native of NJ, who has through the years played with countless musicians and bands doing session work, film tracks and touring.
Divine Ratio is a band dedicated to and propelled forward by the idea that real music is not an accident or a preconceived corporate blueprint, but rather a vehicle for creating a sound that is emotional, compelling, and able to release people's hearts and minds.
The members of Divine Ratio are also involved in a side project called 'Acoustic Sense'. Acoustic Sense incorporates drums/bass/mandolin/and acoustic guitars to bring together an impressive live show consisting of cover songs ranging from, but not limited to, music by Led Zeppelin, Tool, Pink Floyd, A Perfect Circle, Sublime, AudioSlave, Alice In Chains, Maroon 5, Stone Temple Pilots, Ben Harper, Johnny Cash, Dave Matthews, and The Police.
Recently, I came to the conclusion that I like raisins. Not those strange, greenish raisins, definitely not, but the dark raisins. Their texture is amazing. I was eating my raisins the other day when, suddenly, they began to leap from the box, seemingly in protest. I said, "Raisins, what the hell are you doing?" They replied, "We wish to remain uneaten." I said, "You are raisins, that is your function." They agreed, preferring not to question the more absurd and macabre aspects of their existence I suppose, and crept back into the box. At that point, it became clear that I could no longer eat them, as that would be too predictable, so I flushed them down the toilet. Then I realized that I had not been victorious at all, because they ultimately would have been deposited there anyway. Too late. Maybe a sewer alligator or python enjoyed them.
Evoke arousal of the subconscious mind; Turn on your intellect.. make you think and feel high, aware and as one. That is what we hope to do with our music...
