About me: We are located at 5526 Monterey Road in Hermon California (5) five minutes north of Downtown Los Angeles
Our neighboring Cities are South Pasadena, Montecito Heights, Monterey Hills and Highland Park.
How did we get the name?
Cousins Omar and Nick Mata wanted a name that would have meaning to the community of Hermon. They researched the history of Hermon and North East Los Angeles via the internet,Public libraries, Historians and local museum research centers. While researching the History of the building Cycleway Coffee occupies, they found that it was built on or near part of the right-of-way of the original California Cycleway. Raised in Los Angeles Omar and Nick had never heard of the California Cycleway.
So what was the California Cycleway?
The elevated wooden freeway built in the late 1800's by visionary Horrace Dobbins. It was intended to connect cyclists from Pasadena California to downtown Los Angeles. It opened on January 1st, 1900. The California Cycleway fell into disuse in the early 1900's with the invention of the automobile, it was demolished and a major part of the right of way later became known as the historic 110 freeway.
Omar and Nick wanted to share this history with the Community. Large Pictures of the California Cycleway will be displayed on the Walls of Cycleway Coffee. Please come show support and revive the spirit of California history.
