About me: BIOGRAPHY of Alassane Sarr
Alassane Sarr comes from a griot family in Dakar, Senegal, West Africa. The griot tradition of Senegal combines storytelling and musical performance to communicate the history of Senegalese people. In addition to the griot tradition of his family, Alassane attended the School of Art in Dakar at the age of fifteen and completed the courses at the age of twenty-one. Following school, Alassane became a performer of the Silimbo Dance Company of Dakar, Senegal. In 1991 the Silimbo dancers were hired to perform in the United States for Black History Month. From then on, Alassane's career continued to develop as an Instructor and Performer of West African styles throughout the United States.
Alassane is a West African dance and drum instructor, history teller, drum-maker, leather jewelry maker, costume designer, and performer. Drums are the instruments that speak the language of African dance. Drum making requires utilization of mathematical and scientific abilities. Alassane is able to create the instruments and teach its unique rhythm, some of which includes: Sabar, Sorubam, Tama, Djembe, Djun Djun, Congas, and Bougaroubou. The Sabar drum family, along with others, connects each movement with its proper society, teaching all about the history of Africa through sound. Both the beginner and advanced dance student will learn the appropriate level of movements along with the folklore from Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and Casamance, Africa. With the energy of sound and sight Alassane includes the diversity of traditional costumes. These dancing objects such as the bile (horse tail), palm raffia, and calabash add authenticity to ceremonial and ritual dances. The student will learn what kind of costumes to design for specific dances of African societies.
Performance is how Alassane brings it all to life in front of an audience. After his students are supplied with the tools, they are able to combine their knowledge base with natural abilities into orchestrated musical performances. Alassane’s own experience of delighting others with his talents enables him to direct an enchanted presentation of Africa’s past, present, and future.
Alassane would like to inspire people of all ages to learn about West African culture and art. He has the ability to illustrate his culture through workshops, performances and classroom participation. His goal is to interest people from diverse backgrounds of the dance and percussion styles that he helps to keep alive. Alassane strives to enlighten the lives of many through his dynamic ability to share West African culture.

Debra Crosby film/documentary on A3D's Humanitarian trip to Senegal, West Africa 2007.
This was shown @ the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival and it is something that A3D is very proud of, because this film came to life through all of volunteer directors and members and their selfless giving of time and efforts to bring computers etc to Senegal.
Debra Crosby spent countless number of hours (unpaid) working on the Peace, Love and Hope Documentary to help fulfill her and our dream of spreading the great works of our nonprofit organization in "Making a Difference" Through her our Love, our Work and our Hopes for A3D will be shared and seen by many!
As-salaamu 3alaiikum.
