Books
a prayer for owen meany, by john irving, is the best novel in the world (even though i'm not that crazy about his other stuff, except for maybe the hotel new hampshire.) the handmaid's tale is another classic (margaret atwood) and if you want excitement read anything by richard price.
carol maso is a genius (esp. "the american woman in the chinese hat" and "the room lit by roses") marianne wiggins is a genius (esp. "almost heaven") madison smartt bell is a genius. his short stories are as tremendous as his novels (esp. "soldiers joy"). the historical stuff i'm not so much into. read every every everything they write.
favorite poets of the moment are tony hoagland, ellen bass, kim addonizio, martin espada, brenda hillman, marie howe, patricia smith, d.a. levy. there are so many good writers.
Heroes
buddha, patti smith, amanda palmer, ghandi, mlk, jc sometimes -- though i wish he'd come back and do something about all the fetus-flinging assholes that claim to represent him around here, arianna huffington, michael moore, and -- yes -- john kerry, for all his environmental work
Who I'd like to meet: people. articulate, honest, intense risk-taking motherfuckers. gender, economic status, race, creed, not important. except if you're an atheist we might have communication problems as SOMETHING other than us gotta be running this picture show, no?
