CoknI O'Dire was born Otis Olivier Lyjasu Williams in England to Jamaican parents, and raised in NY in the
'70's on some Carlito's way ish. They then moved from the Boogie down to
the Desert where he first experienced what we all know as the hip hop
renaissance where a ni@@a got to know how to break, bomb, battle, burn,
He part of mad crews. Him first crew was El Producto consisting of
cats from Harlem and Brooklyn who moved to Jamaica Queens and wanted to
make it like they hood. So they turned cats on to coke and PCP. Son got
into all the drugs except Heroine. The idea of willing getting
injections was retarted to Dog. If he knew you could sniff and smoke it he
probably would a tried so thank God for that. They dealed and stealed and
almost got killed!! So the Lord led the I to left that.
Enough about the devlishment O got into; because within that was the block party era where O was the bBox for the Albino Twins. His name then was Otee-O and one of the mc's was James Todd Smith who chose to call himself LL Cool J. He didn't understand it then, but I think you know now. One of his ELPD brothers, D-Rock, taught him how to rhyme and they formed a group that encouraged O to battle anybody. He battled Rozell at Roller Castle in Elmont, N.Y. back in the eighties,It was hosted by Biz Markie but De-Rock and Otee-O lost because Rah was a better performer and had the support of the Hollis Crew. Still they bagged 2 skins after the show so it wasn't a complete loss. Later on O embraced his Jamaican heritage and selected for a sound outta of Southside Queens called Gordon's. Their goal was to stir up the energy of the dance until a bad boy lick shot! Meaning literally open fire in the dance.
Blacka Don of the sound called O English because they knew he was from the UK. O never love that name so the next best thing was Cokney, the dialect of Londoners, which was a joke at the time, but the originality of the tag O felt and kept.
Chapter 4, there was this scene in the
eighties that was very artsy in hip hop. It consisted of graffiti
writers and mc's that had uptown girls from Manhattan or was trying to
scoop them. They would got to the Greenwich Village and bag dips who
looked like Vinia Mojica, or Badu, or Jill Scott or Monie Love, or
Amerie, or...you get what I'm sayin' Lauryn Hill, Tweet type chicken that had knowledge of self and reminded us of where we came from as a cultural collective (man those were las dias).
Runnin' around you had my man Divine Styler, QTip, Jarobi, Mos Def,
my man Del, and a bunch a ni@@as I forgot they name but they probably
large in the music industry or whatever. Afrika from the Jungle Bros. actually gave CoknI the idea to go with CoknI O'Dire (read the blog "The Meaning of the Name").
Divine Stler got a deal with Epic Records CBS through Ice T's Rhyme
Syndnicate and he asked CoknI if he wanted get down with him in LA. They were
now known as Scheme Team. Then CoknI realized that LA was not
NY, he broke out to find some real ni@@as. He met some Rasta yout who
called themselves African Unity with Alywad who had some chewy gooey.
He told Rastafari I CoknI bout the club scene and such and such and he decided to
venture and found he liked all the mixing that ws going on. He brought a
crate from NY and went around killing everybody who thought they were
selectors. That's when He started to really get into career DJing. Back in NY, he was selecting for Gordon's Sound in Southside where the goal was to play whatever would make bad boy lick dem gun!
One night he went out Lava Caro in Hollywood at club Guatelinda and
heard his favorite song in the world was playing. Bob James' "Nautilus" was
being played properly by this little white boy from England name Daz.
He was O's kinda people. He told him about a club named Brass where
people who 'listened' and really loved music to dance to went. So CoknI
went in there with my two crate and repped. More than that he got on the
microphone and found that he was nice as a party hyping MC.
With a never ending thirst for new music, O met this cat Tomas
Palermo at a record store name Rhino. He was the reggae buyer. He also
had a radio show, DJ'd, played in a band, wrote for a popular magazine,
and was a skater in his on right. He was good people and O was mentored him because he wanted to do mad things but didn't prioritize
well and as a result didn't do nothing. He put Duke on to his clique
Umoja which means unity. There was my dog Daz and this other cat Jun.
Jun wan nutz he played mostly techno. He put Money on to jungle and
basically anything any of them played was shared with each other and it
just elevated the musical understanding all to the advent of Umoja
Sound.
CoknI kept that affiliation even as he hooked up with Kiilu of Freestyle
Fellowship and represented KPL.
Divine called O out of the blue after
he got married to his queen Monique to tell him that House of Pain wanted
to put them on. That may not make sense to y'all but Everlast and Divine
go back to the Rhyme Sydnicate days and they have remained friends.
with that move O got to see a lot of the planet. Austrailia, Italy,
Europe; it was banoodles!
(If you still reading this God bless you for your patience and I hope
it was no waste of time.)
CoknI got this job with Daz at Delicious Vinyl promoting Born
Jamericans, a hip-hop dancehall group that he related to because they
were Jamaican Americans who knew music. They were cool with him and when
they went Japan they brought yours truly as the DJ.
You know all the experience he's had you think the yout would be on some
Funk Master Flex, but truly Dun's more interested in the music then O's self.
One of his greatest joys is listening to a soundclash and imagining what
the crowd is doing and what it would be like if he had those dubPlates.
then he looks over at his wife and 3 beautiful pickney and say no way Jose
this is where Faddah wanna stay.
Who I'd like to meet: Jesus the Christ, myself and see what it would be like to meet me, Common, Ninjaman, My youngest daughter's first boyfriend (she's 2 now), my son's family (he's 9 months old), My oldest daughter's entertainment lawyer, agent, and personal assistant(she dum tallented), John Hughes,Kanye West, John the Baptist and David because I heard that archaelogically he never existed. Ah wha some guy feel like?
