If you lived in the Ocean State and were a music fan in the mid-1980s, you probably remember Coat Of Arms. Starting out as high school punk-rockers, the band quickly morphed into college radio power-pop royalty. Fronted by lead singer Pip (currently of Blizzard Of 78 ), they were known for their exuberant live energy coupled with a keen sense of melody.
Their musical peers were The Pixies, Lemonheads, Throwing Muses, Blake Babies. They opened for every nationally-touring band imaginable, including Meat Puppets, Husker Du, Ramones, and Firehose. They were finalists in the 1987 WBRU Rock Hunt. The Pixies used to open up for them. They were huge in Madison Wisconsin. Their unruly fans would yell "ROUST!" uncontrollably at shows. The press deemed them "too big for their britches". And they continue to be cited as one of the finest bands ever to emerge from Rhode Island.
Coat Of Arms will reunite for one show only, Saturday August 12 @ AS220 in downtown Providence RI. Original members Pip, Paul, Kelly Cole and "Rudu" will be onstage together for the first time since 1988.
