Courtney's Interests
General
i am interested in strangeness and intimacy and the odd places they bump up together. i am interested in the concepts of nationality, gender, and sexuality. in the tension b/t art for art's sake and art as a vehicle for an agenda. i want to make the world better and safer, but freer, too. i am interested in writers and how they think. i am interested in the evolution of ireland... i am interested in naps. i haven't been a big napper, but i think it might be time to try them out again. and i am interested in dancing.
Music
the pogues, tom waits, leonard cohen, stevie wonder, lyle lovett, john prine, elvis costello. kate bush, joni mitchell, laura nyro, sinead o'connor. feist, MIA, jose gonzalez, zero 7, air, most damon albarn projects. nicks lowe, drake, and cave. jimmy smith and wes montgomery (thanks to peter). i like dancing. i also like singing.
Movies
withnail and i, la strada, once upon a time in the west, buffalo 66 -- but yeah, the mere presence of vincent gallo in a film makes me uncomfortable, otherwise -- i like movies... watch whatever they send me on netflix. i have seen all the 07 academy award best picture nominees -- that is a first for me!
Television
LOST, FATHER TED, FAWLTY TOWERS, whatever is on when i visit my mom's or a motel with cable... i love cable... it is like crack... i cannot tear myself away... so i cannot have it in my house. i will tell you that i do not like two and a half men at all. not even a little bit.
Books
you can keep your suggestions to yourself, i have plenty of books. when i need book suggestions, i will make a public plea. i read a lot, though not as much as i would have my instructors think i do. i am on goodreads.com, too, if you want to see what i really think.
assistant district attorney, gina smith. andrea dworkin -- controversial, i know, and i am not finished her book, but... come on, those are the balls i'm looking for!

Who I'd like to meet: i'd like to meet writers, poets mostly, who live in the east falls/manayunk/rox area who maybe want to meet and write a few hours a month... for revision suggestions and maybe some fun prompted writing exercises. people who would pay me for my wisdom.
i'd also like to meet real friends of mine.
Earlier tonight I reached out to Mark's partner Paul who will be teaching my writing workshop in August. I planted a seed in his ear about possibly coming to Rosemont to read. If he's interested, I'll mention it to Liz and see if something can be arranged.
I didn't know that Peter is on dialysis. Wow. He looks great! Truro Center at Castle Hill also offers weekend-long workshops in the fall in case you were, perhaps, able to get up there on your own. I took a class there with Bill Mann (who is penning Liz Taylor's bio now and has written a slew of novels) and loved it. Made some great contacts including a former soap opera writer/producer/director. I'm looking forward to Paul Lisicky's course and hopefully meeting Mark Doty (he's probably teaching in the adjoining classroom).
Get thee cleaning, Rosemont alum! Just got back from Provincetown. Have you ever been up there? There's a great arts center nearby in Truro that holds writing workshops. Mark Doty is teaching there in mid-August. His partner Paul Lisicky is teaching a fiction workshop that I'll be taking. Check it out at www. castlehill. org. Also check out www. fawc. org for writing workshops in Provincetown. It might be a cool jaunt for you and Peter to take!
I'm moving on the 9th... though my car left yesterday. I know that I will miss the Cardinal O'Hara alumni event.... my mom offered to buy me a plane ticket home, but since I have never been to an alumni event... I told her to save the offer for later. You are welcome to go and pretend to be me.
I will absolutely be there for your graduation! I didn't know you were graduating this year, that's awesome! So sorry I missed last night. I suck :( Oh, and I really do suck at scrabble.
I'm excited to read your thesis poems too--some of the poems last night left me wanting to see them on paper too. There was so much to absorb and i can't wait to see it after hearing it. Did you guys go celebrate last night? Hope so
