We live in a nation of laws, and George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney must observe those laws like everyone else. But consider a few of the things done by their administration:
They twisted and cherry-picked intelligence to support going to war (illegally) in Iraq, and deliberately distorted the truth to build their case.
They outed a CIA employee, Valerie Plame Wilson, in retaliation against her husband, who published information that discredited their positions.
They violated the Geneva conventions by approving of torture and "renditions" (see the case of Maher Arar), thus severely damaging the position of the US on human rights issues; and allowed the atrocities at Abu Ghraib to happen. The Geneva conventions have effectively been killed by the Bush administration, and American soldiers will now be more likely to face torture than before.
They allowed our soldiers in Iraq to use white phosphorus (an incendiary chemical that causes severe burns and napalm against insurgents.
They broke the FISA law by conducting secret, domestic wiretaps without court authority.
They demonstrated contempt for the legislative branch by writing numerous "signing statements" that attempt to rewrite the law.
I have called on my representatives in the US Congress to hold the administration accountable for these wrongs, but so far there hasn't been much action. There doesn't seem to be enough political will for impeachment. But nothing else would be enough to demonstrate to the world that we are a nation that abides by the rule of law, that values justice. Our Constitutional system of checks and balances requires that Congress act without further delay. We need more clamor at the grass-roots level to convince our politicians to do what needs to be done. If we miss this chance to hold our leaders accountable, future leaders will figure they can commit similar crimes and get away with it. Can we afford NOT to impeach Bush and Cheney?
I've decided it's time to do more than cross my fingers and hope. We've got to DEMAND justice, now!
So call or write to your representatives in the House or Senate. And spread the word! There has never been a worse time for apathy. Please repost this freely. And let me know if you have any other ideas.
