A soulful Canadian singer whose voice brings to mind Lisa Stansfield, Charlene Smith began her career in an R&B covers band, singing the songs of idols like the Gap Band, Chaka Khan, SWV, and Vesta Williams. In 1992 she joined Rob De Boer for the producer's eclectic dancefloor project the Boomtang Boys.
With De Boer working behind the scenes of her solo career, Smith signed with the U.K. label China along with Warner Music Canada and released Feel the Goodtimes in 1995. "Let It Slide" and the album's title track became hits in Canada as well as the U.K. and were included on the Japanese collection The Essence of Charlene Smith which also featured remixes. After moving to the China imprint Indochina, she released Life Is High in 1997 and then quietly exited the corporate music industry. In 2009 she reappeared as an independent artist and announced work had begun on a new album. ~ David Jeffries
