Founded in 2003, the Portland-based Brian Copeland Band (BCB) has been enjoying critical recognition and a growing reputation for leading the northwest’s pop music resurgence. Piloted by singer/songwriter Brian Copeland, the evolution of his latest project can be traced back through nearly fifteen years of on-stage success and partnerships with dozens of accomplished musicians. Most recently, Copeland is teaming up with world-class pianist, songwriter, and arranger Matt Burnett. Among Matt’s credits is recording work with multi-platinum artist Jim Brickman.
With some of the best regional talent on board, including Matt Burnett ..s, Robin Way (Barons in Trees) on percussion, Amelia Bierly ..o, and a rotating cast of instrumentalists, the Brian Copeland Band is back in the studio recording a new album slated for release later this year. As the current three-song demo shows, fans and music critics alike can count on an expertly orchestrated collection of songs that combine the warmth and refinement of classical strings with Burnett’s catchy piano hooks and Copeland’s powerful lead vocals. Recorded with award-winning engineer and producer Keith Sommers (Absinthe, Lowcraft, Phonochrome), the demo showcases not only superb musicianship, but Copeland’s production and songwriting chops as well.
BCB’s first album, Daffodil, met with instant success and was an obvious departure from the up-tempo funk jams Copeland had become known for as the force behind local favorites The Furleys and Pale Green Pants. Transitioning to a sexier, more sophisticated pop sound on their sophomore release, Velvet Crush, the band went on to win the regional finals of the Emergenza International Music Festival and secure a coveted main stage slot at The Bite of Oregon.
Portland’s premier nightlife television show, PDXposed had this to say about a recent BCB performance at Berbati’s Pan: “Experiencing the Brian Copeland Band for the first time, we were inspired by Copeland’s lyrics and his obvious positive and upbeat way of looking at life. Every musician in the band is excellent and impressive in their own right. Together they make a tight, cohesive unit that is at once charismatic and energetic. We can't wait to film them again!”
As a vetted pop musician at the center of a galaxy of classically trained musicians, Brian Copeland has built a powerhouse pop institution that remains fresh and engaging from album to album and show to show.
