It took me many years to realize what it is I love about music. I'm not that good at performing and have no interest in putting in the effort it takes to be good at it: practice, desire, charisma, self-promotion...skill. What I do enjoy is writing and recording songs. Once a song is written it becomes an archive, a diary entry. While many artists would practice a song ten, twenty, a hundred times before recording it, I find that each time I play a song it loses a bit of it's charm. So I play it once, too often making up the structure as I go. The vast majority are written, recorded and mixed in less than an hour. More often than not what I record is the only time the song has ever, or will ever, be played. I don't spend time editing, cutting and pasting, reworking, rerecording unless I'm adding additional instrumentation. Maybe I should. But, I'm not perfect and won't pretend to be. Sometimes I go to a wrong chord or note, mistake a lyric, and it's rather likely that my voice will go out of key at least once. An old friend once told me that the little mistakes in recordings, though they may bother you at first, will become your favorite part ten years later. And it's true, for me.
