The bowerbird's long-distance advertising songs are loud vocalizations typically given by a male as he perches in the understory above his bower. Please note:The first song below comes from our l.p., "Hymns for a Dark Horse." The others come from our e.p., "Danger at Sea." You can buy the e.p. by clicking the button below the player, or buy the new CD (or the EP) at www.bowerbirds.org.
We are honored to be nominated for a PLUG award, in the Americana category, for Hymns for a Dark Horse, and you can vote for us. Check out www.plugawards.com and cast your votes.
Also, we apologize that we have not been able to keep up with myspace messages, because we don't have fast internet at the Airstream, and myspace takes forever to load there. If you would like to get in touch with us, please go to bowerbirds.org and follow the email link.
Here are the enticing images you will see on our website. Look for these, and click on them (on bowerbirds.org) to buy. Our album will not be available digitally or in stores until this spring, when it will be re-released on Dead Oceans with two bonus tracks. We are still selling a limited run of the original version of Hymns and Danger, from our website, until the rerelease this spring, when that version will be replaced with the new one.
The male crestless bowerbird is completely drab. His plumage is indistinguishable from the female's. His bower has therefore grown more elaborate to take the place of colorful feathers. He gathers insect skeletons, shells, seeds and charcoal, and arranges them in neat piles in his bower. While bobbing about to attract the female, he holds a colorful object, usually a flower, in his bill.
