In this case, one man’s sorrow is the listener’s good fortune. Birdy was hatched from personal tragedy in the spring of 2006. With the help of bandmates, singer Dav Hoof has channeled his experiences into a sonic exorcism of those demons. Birdy’s sound is both imbued with idealism and tainted by life’s complexities. The band is simultaneously a homage to indie rock, past and present, and an exploration of their personal life experience.
Drawing from their varied interests in rock, dub, electronica, and 80’s pop, Birdy’s music blends these elements in a refreshing new way. As for members Dav Hoof (vocals), Tim Hochman (bass), Mark Prather (synth/ keys), Greg Lopez (guitar), Colin Bricker (guitar/ laptop) and Monty Thorin (drums), they are a collection of schooled and unschooled musicians whose collaboration has produced an unexpected synergy. Through their creative process, Birdy has effectively blurred the lines between art and pop.
Birdy’s self titled EP was released in the summer of 2007 and has garnered critical acclaim. Birdy can be heard on the airways at KEXP (Seattle) and KVCU (Boulder) to name a few. They have been compared to Queens of the Stone Age, TV on the Radio and Wolf Parade. The singer’s voice is instantly recognizable and reminds of the off kilter angst of Bob Mould. They have most recently opened for national act Jesse Malin and have become regulars on Denver’s indie rock club scene. The members have returned to the studio in preparation for their full length release. In 2008, look for a series of small national tours and the release and support of there upcoming CD.
