Big Joe Burke re-emerged in Vancouver's roots music community in the Spring of 2006, after a 12 year time out - during which his focus was directed on raising kids with his wife of 18 years, Glynis Burke. Since re-entering the world of music, Burke has been making up for lost time BIG time - forming a band with some of Vancouver's finest musicians, recording his debut album "Love or Money", playing in "New Music West - 2007", appearing on Shaw Cable's "Urban Rush", winning The Province's "Battle of the Buskers" with band mate Gord Smithers, appearing in The Province Newspaper Twice (CD Review by Tom Harrison in August 2007 and in December 2007 listed by Tom as one of Vancouver's "Best Local Groups"), and playing at Local Venues and Local Jams quite regularly - including hosting YVR Productions "Big Honky Tonk Holiday Revue"(December 2007).
Jimmy Roy - Steel / Electric Guitar
Jimmy Roy, a recent addition to the lineup, is an icon and veteran of Vancouver’s rockabilly & western swing music scene - as a highly talented steel and electric guitar player. Jimmy Roy has been gracing the stage with his stylish presence, gentlemanly charm and natural born musical gifts with “Jimmy Roy's Five Star Hillbillies”, “Ray Condo and His Ricochets” and, for the last six years,“Big Sandy & His Fly-rite Boys”. Jimmy Roy has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe and Japan. He has made several appearances on “The Grand Ole Opry” and has been a musical guest of the “Late Night with Conan O'Brien” TV show. In December of 2007, Jimmy Roy played with Big Joe in the Revue band for “YVR Productions - Big Honky Tonk Holiday Revue”, and he also hosts a Roots & Rockabilly Jam once a month at Vancouver’s popular “Railway Club”.
Gord is a highly respected veteran of the Vancouver alternative, roots and rockabilly scene, having contributed his talents to many of Vancouver’s best local acts including "The Deadcats", "The Kon-Tikis", "Wichita Trip", "Boomchix" and more. In addition to electric guitar, Gord also plays steel guitar, dobro, banjo, mandolin and fiddle, and is considered by many to be one of Vancouver's best guitar players. His considerable talents have also garnered him a sponsorship with Vancouver’s Sparrow Guitars. Gord joined Big Joe in 2006, quickly helping to mold the sound of the band with his unique brand of edgy, country twang. Dependable, hard working, and driven - he is a highly valued asset in Big Joe Burke's band.
Sandy Bone - Drums
Sandy's talents on the skins have placed him at the top of the Canadian music heap. Honoured as "Best Canadian Blues Drummer" by Real Blues magazine an unprecedented eight times, he also received a JUNO nomination with his former band, "The Twisters", which garnered Best Blues Record of 2003 at The Canadian Independent Music Awards. Seasoned, professional, and highly spirited - Sandy joined Big Joe Burke in 2006, to record “Love or Money” (not for money - but for the love of Big Joe’s music) bringing a slick and soulful feel into the mix with his creativity and finesse. A good friend, with a positive attitude and drive to excel - Sandy is the number one drummer for Big Joe's band. Sandy currently fronts local (Vancouver) Roots Music band: “Sandy Bone & The Breakdown” and is longtime host of a successful weekly roots music jam at The Princeton Pub.
Pat Darcus - Upright Bass - Vocals
Joining the band in the winter of 2007, Pat has 20 years of experience playing in the Vancouver Blues, Rock n’ Roll, Alt-Country scenes. Pat has recorded albums with ‘My Idea of Fun’, ‘The Steve Hansen Combo’ and ‘The Reverberators’ and has been a regular with Earthshakers, Jimy Now, Elbore James and Re-Beat generation - opening for notables such as Duke Robillard, RL Burnside, Mick Taylor and Buckwheat Zydeco - among others. Pat provides a solid back end, beautiful harmonies, a great attitude and solid work ethic to the band.

"Few people do this kind of country anymore. It's either slick and self-conscious or leaning in the direction of pop-rock. Burke is rough and twangy; guitar and pedal steel indulge in a gruesome duel while he sings of drinking till he dies, or gets nostalgic thinking about his prairie town. There is more enthusiasm than refinement, more up-tempo energy than introspection. A song such as "Statue" goes back to that place where country met rock 'n' roll, or Hank Williams met Elvis Presley. Burke's choice of covers is telling, too: Wilco (the new), Merle Haggard (the old) and George Jones (the sodden). Grade: B" - Tom Harrison, The Province. September 4, 2007
Big Joe Burke's debut album "Love or Money" draws our attention to moments in time that define us, make us who we are. "We all make decisions and compromises in our lives; often the most important involve a choice between love or money."
Burke's own life story is the stuff that country songs (and legends) have long been made of, connecting him to music and inspiring him to become a musician at an early age.
As a songwriter, Burke's intensely visual lyrics are like a collection of cleverly written vignettes, character sketches and raw, honest, soulful expression. In "Love or Money", Burke's songs tell of the life hard lived, of choices made, or left unmade, prices paid, and the value of love.
"Love or Money" makes no judgments and pushes no answers. "I'm just sharing observations and experiences." Burke states. "We all have to make our own choices in life, and live with them."
Burke's performance is sincere and heartfelt. "I love performing," Burke states, "seeing and feeling how a song can touch the audience. Making that kind of connection with people just shows how much we all share in common."
Since releasing "Love or Money" in the summer of 2007 Burke has been reaching into the hearts and minds of fans from Vancouver to Berlin - and developing a devoted fan base of folks who've come to see him as a friend.
Burke's powerful pipes, ability to sing from the heart and express each song as if living the moment, definitely bring his listeners deep inside every song he performs.
Burke's musical influence spans the decades; Williams, Cash and Presley to Townshend, Costello and Tweedy. Comparisons can be made to some of country and rock'n'roll's greats, but "Love or Money" defines Big Joe Burke as a singer, songwriter and performer who has what it takes to become a legend unto his own.
