BASE Movement Theatre brings life and energy to unique and historic venues. This performance art group creates living murals within evolving and abandoned landscapes. Contrasting vibrant modern dance with the warehouse setting of The Bottling Plant, CLUTCH is an installation incorporating site-specific performances choreographed by Megan Mertaugh, as well as a selection of filmed performances produced and captured in select locations within the 120-year old historic structures of the former Traverse City State Hospital in Northern Michigan. These films were created in collaboration between Megan Mertaugh and Grace Blackmer of BASE Movement Theatre, and cinematographer Rich Brauer of Brauer Productions Inc.

ABOUT DROP YOUR ART.:
DROP YOUR ART. is inspired by the historic buildings of the former state hospital in Traverse City Michigan. The energy of this abandoned landscape has captivated Mertaugh’s heart and imagination since childhood. Mertaugh approaches this work with the belief that the environment provides both sustenance and a canvas for life and art. The purchase of the buildings by The Minervini Group for the purpose of historic preservation and renovation into The Village at Grand Traverse Commons, provided the unique opportunity for BASE Movement Theater to create DROP YOUR ART. in mutual alignment with the Minervini’s respect for the extraordinary historic legacy of these spaces, and their vision to bring a new life to these remarkable buildings.

Components included film, photography, and sound. Rich Brauer of Brauer Productions, Inc., recorded the dance at 6 frames per second on 16MM film and presented it using an array of vintage projectors.
