March On Washington December 4, 2006
To Save Brown v. Board of Education!

On Monday, December 4, 2006, civil rights activists from across the nation will march and rally at the U.S. Supreme Court when oral arguments are heard in two lawsuits which seek to bar any and all measures that promote racial integration and equal opportunity in American education. The ruling in these cases, Meredith v. Jefferson County Public Schools and Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District, will determine whether or not measures to desegregate K-12 public schools, as well as affirmative action programs for higher education, remain legal.

This is the fight of our lifetime. Everyone who cares about equality and freedom needs to be in DC on December 4th. The Court's ruling in these cases will be based on political, not just legal considerations. This means that we must have a social and political response to affect the outcome of these lawsuits. The Latino/a communities and youth who gave birth to the new civil rights movement in the struggle for immigrant rights last spring showed that when we stand together and fight, we win.

These cases will be remembered as the turning point in our nation's history, when it was decided whether equality and integration would remain on the American agenda, or we would return to a period of segregation enforced by law. Put plainly, this Supreme Court will decide whether to stand on its most seminal decision, Brown v. Board of Education, or return to Plessy v. Ferguson's notorious legal fiction of 'separate but equal'. They will also determine whether the Court's 2003 ruling upholding affirmative action programs is upheld.

BAMN, The Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration and Immigrant Rights and Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary - the organization that spearheaded the 2003 March on Washington to Defend Affirmative Action and Save Brown v. Board of Education - is leading the organizing effort. Student and youth-led mobilization committees have been built in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, Seattle, Detroit, and Louisville and are forming throughout the country.

A broad spectrum of organizations and individuals are mobilizing for the December 4th March on Washington.

With only SEVEN weeks until December 4th, we must begin IMMEDIATELY to organize contingents.

The steps are simple:

-Forward this information today (send an email, make phone calls, post a bulletin, update your blog, hit up message boards, etc.)

Everyone should know about what they can do to Save Brown v. Board of Education--including your friends, colleagues and acquaintances (in church, school, unions, professional organizations, etc.)

-Write about the march in your organization's newsletter or school newspaper and contact any and all media and let them know what's happening December 4th!

Circulate The Petition:

-Add your organization to the list of endorsers.

-Appoint a contact person to be posted on this site as the organizer in your area.

-Contact other groups in your area.

-Begin fundraising for Charter buses.

-Hold a press conference announcing your community's mobilization for Washington.

Make A Tax-Deductible Donation! Sponsor Students To Attend the March on Washington!!

-For more information and/or assistance with these tasks, call 313-468-3398.

Who I'd like to meet:

You and everyone you know who stands for equal quality education and equal opportunity for all people in our society.

we are people on both sides who are creating
a cycle of hate which all of us are partaking
we are people on both sides who are denying
the truth just to keep us all from uniting
as one we can stop our hate and start uprising

we are people on both sides who are claiming
lives of the innocent and god is who we are blaming
we are people on both sides who are believing
this war that we fight is right somehow it is retrieving
the peace that we have lost within all of our grieving

war is not for peace
peace is what we are singing for

we are people on both sides who are protesting
against our selfish governments who are oppressing
we are people on both sides candle lighting
outside our leaders spheres only asking
to find out a way to keep our kin from dying

war is not for peace
peace is what we are singing for

no more war
can we sing it now
harmonizing loud
now as one

no more illusions

bombs are dropping out of war planes
bombs are dropping in our names
lives are ending only fear remains
lives are ending in our names

no more war
can we sing it now
harmonizing loud
now as one

This is the fight of our lifetime. In the next three weeks the DC Area will be taken over by a flood of posters and fliers announcing the March on Washington to Save Brown v. Board. MySpace, Facebook, etc. should be no different! It is time to get serious about getting the word out on Myspace, Facebook, etc. No comment section, blog, bulletin board, or message board should be without a webbanner announcing the December 4th March to Save Integration and Affirmative Action. We owe it to every person we know to let them know that what we do today will determine the future of Civil Rights and equality for the entire nation.

Copy and paste the BAMN MySpace banner code followed by the text in this message on your page and the pages of everyone you know. Get the word out by any means necessary!

Association of Raza Educators Scholarship Fund

On September 15th 2006, during an after school conversation, a group of caring educators decided that the best way to assist their students with college and financial aid information was to establish the Association of Raza Educators Scholarship Fund. These Educators recognized that many of their brightest students were not eligible for federal financial aid or many scholarships because of their citizenship status. They realized the need to provide funding and more scholarship opportunities for some of their students; regardless of their citizenship status.

The Association of Raza Educators (ARE) believes that all students deserve an opportunity to attend college without discrimination of any kind. The ARE Scholarship Fund will assist students realize their dreams of a college education. In our first year, we hope to provide over $10,000 in scholarships.

Latinos are the largest ethnic minority in the United States and the fastest growing segment of the population. Yet, Latinos rank among the lowest in high school graduation rates and among the lowest in attending four year universities. Regardless of how much federal and state financial aid Latino students receive, a large segment of the Latino community will not be able to receive the financial assistance that they need due to their undocumented status.

Given these facts, the Association of Raza Educators hopes you and/or your company can assist us in our endeavor of providing scholarship opportunities to the best and the brightest students the Latino community can offer.

Please join our efforts by sponsoring and/or attending our first fundraiser of the year. Ticket Prices and Sponsorship opportunities are provided below.
