Sounds Like
"The lovely harmonies, Howser's catchy tunes, and the overall sense of summery languor make Songs from the Pine Room a most entertaining listen."--All Music Guide
"an honest and versatile sound"--West Coast Performer
"With its dual themes of loss and drinking, [Songs from the Pine Room is] as country as a greased pig (and yeah, that's a compliment)."--San Francisco Bay Guardian
"The whole album is destined to be a favorite of pedal steel fans everywhere as Mac Martine plays Jon Rauhouse to the rest of the band's Neko Case."--SF Weekly
Seems what's happening these days is that indie and punk rock kids are getting drunk and finding religion in bluegrass and country's three-chords-and-the-truth. They're dropping their strats and SGs for mandolins and pedal steel, trading in angst-ridden, screaming vocals for irony-free sweet melodies, and forming bands like Axton Kincaid.
But this isn't that phony crap being passed off as country on commercial radio. Axton Kincaid is a modern, idiosyncratic country band that's been passed through the filter of Tom Waits, Neko Case, and the Stone Roses, but it retains the 3 and 4 part harmonies and gin-soaked twang you'd expect. Their songs about misspent youth, safety tips for drunk drivers, and missing your bartender are winning raves and fans from such disparate quarters as West Coast Performer, All Music Guide, NPR, SF Weekly and SF Bay Guardian.
The band's first full-length CD, Songs from the Pine Room, was released in May 2007 by Free Dirt Records, the Americana/Roots imprint of Trade Root Music, whose artists also include Mary Jane Lammond, the Wilders, and Utah Phillips. The album's three singles, "Red Lights," "Who's Gonna Pour My Whiskey When You're Gone?" and a moody cover of the Stone Roses' "I Wanna Be Adored" were spun nationally on Triple A and Americana radio. "Red Lights," was featured on NPR's All Songs Considered Open Mic program in early 2007, and singer/songwriter Kate Howser was featured in American Songwriter magazine.
After a year of shows in the Bay Area -- playing with the likes of Camper Van Beethoven, the Mother Truckers, Eilen Jewell, and Red Meat -- two Northwest tours, and a little jaunt to Reno to open for BR-549 at the legendary Nugget Casino, the band entered the studio to record its second album, Silver Dollars, which will be released by Free Dirt Records/Trade Root October 2008.
