Electro-folk duo dissects millennials’ blasé approach to romance on their latest EP.

If you’re attending a major music festival this year, you will probably see Strangers You Know on the schedule. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Grady Lee (vocals) and Adam Haagen (instruments) met years ago at Coachella. The duo writes and performs prototypical festival fare—a crossbred cyborg of live-looped instrumentation and vocals over sequenced percussion and digital effects.

Following their 2014 debut record, Strangers veered towards a more electronic approach to songwriting. After downsizing from a quartet, Lee and Haagen have evolved admirably as a duo, putting across a delicate sense of subdued intensity in their newest compositions.

On their latest offering, Loosen Up the Leash, which dropped last week, they explore themes of romantic nihilism—feelings that lyricist Lee attributes to his experiences dating in the golden age of the smartphone and dating applications.

Today, Myspace is excited to premiere their latest video, featuring the band performing "Queen of Venice Beach" on Jam in the VanWatch the veiled moodiness seep through the clip's too-cool-to-care demeanor above and get to know the duo a little better below.

Grady, how did you and Adam meet?

Grady Lee: Coachella. [We formed a band because we had] different interests and similar passions.

Why are you called Strangers You Know?

That's what a celebrity is: a stranger you know.

Who are the band's biggest musical influences?

Originally, the Beatles, Coldplay, and John Mayer. Recently new groundbreakers like Hiatus Kaiyote, Anderson Paak, Grey, Lophiile, Lido. [I'd love to collaborate with] the same artists who currently influence me.

Why is your EP called Loosen Up the Leash?

The element that connects all the songs together is the exploration of both the good and bad components of casual relationships. “Loosen Up the Leash” is a way of saying the definition of love has relaxed a little bit.

What themes were you working on when making it?

The major songs are my being OK with it; and the minor ones capture are my discontent. Adam brought a lot of his favorite folk elements in which really helped define our sound.

What's the craziest thing that has happened over the course of your music career so far?

Someone wanted to paint me naked.

If you were a hashtag, what would you be?

#justastranger

Do you have an awesome Myspace-related story as a musician? Can you tell us about it?

I still remember how the song someone had on their profile determined whether or not I could be their friend.
