   About ANGEL PIER

Official "Sprites" video by Orpheu De Jong

BIOGRAPHY

Angel Pier make a discordant noise through unhinged classic pop melodies. Three parts Irish to one part Canadian, Angel Pier layer looping drums and brooding bass, a confrontational guitarist with severe riff-tourettes & a melancholic vocalist with dark lyrical tendencies.

The band have been kicking up a storm in North America since playing the prestigious CMJ festival and have picked up invitations to SXSW, Canadian Music Week & NXNE so far this year, picking up a North American distribution deal with Fontana Distribution as a result.

Debut EP, "Bullet Holes & Broken Sectors" EP was produced by Kieran Lynch (U2, Elvis Costello, REM) & well received.
“Classic indie pop” NME,
“Best New Discovery” Hot Press magazine.
“a classic in waiting” – MP3Hugger

Angel Pier’s follow up EP "Sacrifice", with veteran producer Leo Pearson at the desk , is due September 2008. email contact {at} angelpier.com

PRESS QUOTES

" ....Minutes pass and the fog clears and I normally can come up with a handful of bands that deserve attention. One of them is Dublin band Angel Pier who are about to release their second EP. Their debut EP ‘Bullet Holes & Broken Sectors’ was a dazzling affair with universally strong tracks and a classic in waiting called ‘Sprites’ that coaxed raw emotion through a combination of Darragh Nolan’s shimmering vocals and a heartbreaking set of cascading instrumentation. The forthcoming ‘Sacrifice’ EP is the follow up and although it is not as immediately digestible as its predecessor it shows no less promise with 4 songs that mature beautifully once they are given time to reveal themselves (proving that much like their contemporaries Delorentos, Angel Pier are in love with detail). My favourite is ‘Make’, an intricate affair that swoops and soars like an ecstatic swallow that has just had a wing mended. The percussion on this one is particularly impressive as are Nolan’s shapeshifting vocals. Angel Pier are my tip for 2008. KD"

"Some months back, I received a cd by this fine band, listened to it, liked it, and promptly forgot about it. That was stupid! Because I have come back to it, and there's not a bad track on it. Like one of the posts below, this is a new Irish band taking an old sound and making it work. There's even a Stone Roses melody in there, and I don't like the Stone Roses! It's quietly impressive.
Like most great Irish acts, they're playing the HWCH festival coming up this weekend. Heck, you can even download another track of theirs here on the site. Wonderful.

– The Torture Garden

“Dublin's Angel Pier released a really great EP titled "Bullet Holes & Broken Sectors." I lost my copy for a long time but recently found it amidst some junk in a drawer. It was like a miner finding a small bit of gold.”

– Ryan’s Smashing Life

“Angel Pier, four lads with a natural talent for melody & lyricism, with some interesting, controlled yet expansive arrangements. Even from our lowly viewpoint, they have a ‘look at us’ presence that spills invitingly over the balcony, while their songs use playful choruses to conceal devious hearts of darkness”

- InDublin, HWCH Launch Live Review

"“Goth groove” hopefuls Angel Pier are only a year in existence but already they’ve wooed audiences from Galway to New York. Might they be Ireland’s next break-out success?”

– HotPress magazine

"Indie four-piece Angel Pier follow up their fantastic newly released "Bullet Holes & Broken Sectors" EP with a gig at the Ballroom Of Romance in Dublin on Februaray 23rd, 2007. All uplifting vocals underpinned by classic indie pop, here is a band pitched between Coldplay, My Morning Jacket and The Killers"

– NME

“I’m not one for blathering on about the same band. Perhaps it’s just my ADD-like tendency when it comes to listening to music of late. From time to time though a band strikes a chord (!) and I’m sold. Loney, Dear are fast becoming my favourite for 2007 along with Dublin band Angel Pier whose ‘Bullet Holes & Broken Sectors’ EP is giving my last.fm account some tough arithmetic workouts…. Their EP is a remarkably rounded effort for a band who are barely a year old with tunes such as ‘My Best New Friend’ dishing out bulging melodies, frenetic playing and Darragh Nolan’s ebullient vocal swagger. …On this evidence these particular angels could be playing with a lot of hearts in the near future.”

– Mp3Hugger.com

“John Walshe & Neil Brennan gaze into their crystal balls and predict the Irish acts set to cause a stir in 2007. …taking their blueprint from the Stone Roses and The Cure, and soon added Canadian guitarist Luke, whose classic blues-rock axework complemented the solid foundations, adding some discordant guitar noise to complement Darragh’s soaring, testicle-shrivelling falsetto.”

– HotPress Magazine

“Angel Pier… rapidly becoming the city's most feted purveyors of jangle pop. …‘Sprites’ rival’s Director’s ‘Reconnect’ as the most spine tingling Irish release of the year. Luke Paluch’s guitar shimmers endlessly and when the storming chorus shudders through Darragh Nolan’s voice it becomes a beacon of cool. Heavenly.”

– Mp3Hugger.com

“comparisons with fellow Dubliners Director are at once accurate and wide of the mark with Angel Piers debut EP Bullet Holes & Broken Sectors. One thing is for sure; both bands have a big role to play in the current thriving Irish scene. Angel Pier deal in perfectly crafted guitar pop in which singer Darragh Nolan laments lost love amid catchy hooks and intelligent lyrics and they have delivered handsomely on this debut. …Potential tumbles from every pore of ‘My New Best Friend”, that sense of the future, giving the impression of years ahead amassing a weight of musical maturity and emotional complexity. …Angel Pier have produced a fine debut EP and are sure to be a band to watch this year.”

- Drop-d E-zine

“The Awards – Angel Pier, Best New Discovery. …boy did their easily digestible alt-pop sound draw you in. Top Class stuff.”

– HotPress Magazine

“Angels of the CMJ Festival - With two music festivals under their belt ,Angel Pier, who just formed in January and are poised to release their debut EP in Ireland, are already making the impact of their compelling grooves felt on both sides of the water.”

– Irish Voice

“Edgy and angular strains are accompanied by angelic vocals on Angel Pier's decidedly Irish take on a post-punk sound--you know, processed and studio-tricked-out but ultimately warm and heavenly (and a little like that other Irish band known for their vertiginous rock 'n' roll).”

Howdy Neighbour

I made this album that maybe you’d be interested in. It has tall tales, big brass, quiet melodies and sometimes a pop song breaks out. There is a journal on my site of how I started it without a clue, lost faith in it more often than not and bizarrely managed to finish it - finished recording it, then finished mixing it then finished pressing and printing it. The album is called YOU’RE AN ELCTRON I’M AN ELECTRON

If you’re free on Friday 3rd October, check out my album launch in Radio City.
