I’m a singer songwriter living in London but originally from the land of Chesvegas (Chesterfield)...
I’ve had a lot of different influences, ranging from Metallica, to Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, John Mayer, Tower of Power, Bireli Lagrene, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Newton Faulkner, Clapton, Slash, Rage Against the Machine and so many others that I could mention. Whether or not these have had an influence on my writing, I don’t know….you decide.
Well, a bit more about me…
I grew up in a town called Chesterfield in 1984 and moved to London when I was 21 to pursue a lifetime of what I love doing the most. I’ve always had a real passion for music ever since I can remember – it’s the only thing I ever felt came easily and more naturally to me…I always found that I lost interest and couldn’t pay attention with academia.
Having grown up in a completely musical background has really helped me to be open-minded with music, because I’ve been exposed to all different kinds of it. My Dad is from a place called Manipur in India and he’s always listened to a variety of Eastern and Western music, so I’ve heard him pumping out stuff that ranges from Ravi Shankar to the Prodigy! My uncles are also pretty good tabla players, so it’s a lot of fun having a jam with them when I go over. I guess that side of the family has had a big influence on me, but my mum’s definitely has too. She was born in the Philippines and I don’t know one Filipino that doesn’t love music, or even sing or play guitar!
So once I moved down here I did a course at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, studying guitar (which I recently finished in December 07). I met some really cool people there on my course and a few of the tutors there were really inspiring to learn from; in their approach to their playing, their writing and their general view of the whole ‘music world’.
Now that I’ve finished I’m writing loads and I’m gona get out there gigging as much as my body can physically cope with, so if you do like my stuff, come along to one of my gigs and say hello or drop me a message!
Cheers,
Andy.
