Hailing from Music City, native sons And the Relatives forged their bonds of brotherhood in the trenches of one of the record industry’s biggest strongholds. With backgrounds as a studio musician, a music journalist, and an exhaustively practiced singer/songwriter, these spirited rock and roll aficionados consume and produce copious amounts of music on a daily basis. Inspired by legends like the Beatles, Hank Williams, and T. Rex, And the Relatives are quickly becoming known for explosive live performances and songs that combine pop nuances with that timeless and elusive Nashville sound.
Fueled by an insatiable thirst for new music and a knack for experimentation, ATR found its first incarnation when vocalist/guitar player Andrew Brassell teamed up with his grade school buddy, drummer D. Patrick Rodgers. The two toyed with a zealous blend of rock and roll, psychedelia, hip-hop and spoken word before inviting bassist Zack Bowden to fill out the roster of their budding three-piece. After debuting their authentic brand of rock and roll at a series of high-energy house shows and smoky dive bars throughout the summer of 2006, Bowden was forced to respectfully part ways with ATR in order to pursue a career in medicine. Session bassist Eli Beaird moved in to cover the low-end, and the newly revamped trio began writing and recording music at breakneck speed.
In 2007, And the Relatives released Talking to My Fingers EP, a diverse and energetic first effort that drew comparisons to The Walkmen, Pavement and Silver Jews. ATR later played the Next Big Nashville festival, bringing to the masses what The Nashville Scene has referred to as “pop music amidst an unruly backdrop and some pretty sweet sounding guitars.” Their music has been featured on Vanderbilt’s WRVU and WeOwnThisTown.net’s We Own this Town: Nashville 9 podcast. And the Relatives can currently be found logging countless hours writing, recording and mixing in the shadowy basement studio beneath Eli Beaird’s noble estate.
Be on the lookout for the forthcoming Animals EP, slated for release fall 2008.
