I've been singing in front of crowds since I was a kid, but only in recent years have I really begun to find my voice.
I fell hard for Bonnie Raitt's music at 16 and have come to love all types of American roots music. Perhaps my upbringing as a preacher's daughter set the stage for my love of the gospel tunes of Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley, and the Cox family. My southern roots (Alabama) may be the reason I'm so drawn to music that has themes and instrumentation of the south. Man, I love the banjo, dobro and mandolin! I know that I have T-Bone Burnett to thank for producing the soundtrack for Oh Brother (among other CDs) and my dad for introducing me to it. That ole' timey music just does something to me.
I've also enjoyed getting to know the music of artists like Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris and others who have moved me with their voices and their songs. It's been a great time of exploration into the world of American roots music and the songs that I do in my shows are a reflection of that.
This year has been a big one for me. I launched (for lack of a better word) my music "career" (at 36, I might ad) in January with my first show at the Stagecoach Inn in Groton, MA (where I live). Since that point, I've had sell out shows, was featured as a "Best Bet" by the Boston Globe and was recently interviewed by the Lowell Sun. I've been thrilled with the response thus far. It's really been amazing for me.
At present, I'm singing with my band The Red Clay Rascals plus other special guests who join us. We cover blues, bluegrass, folk, and old country songs by artists I mentioned above as well as Johnny Cash, Keb Mo, the Louvin Brothers, Crooked Still (Cambridge-based), Red Molly and others. We are also starting to play original music. I hope you can come out and hear us some time soon.
The video below is of me and the Red Clay Rascals doing Bonnie Raitt's Big Road at a recent sold out show at J.P. O'Hanlon's in Ayer, Mass.
Hey Amy, Your adoring husband just wants to say that you sound amazing on 'Shadow on the wall.' Can't wait to see what is next for you and your music...
hi Amy! thanks for the add and have a great time at the Stagecoach tomorrow! I haven't been there yet so I'm looking forward to our show next week. You've got a great voice! Hope to meet you in the neighborhood one day! All the best, Lee
Hi again. Check out my friends page and you will find a band called Juke Kartel. See if you recognize the first song on their profile. You love this song!
