About me: I am passionate about saving our environment and living/promoting a "green lifestyle". I love Western Maryland, and Appalachia as an extension of that. I realize that these areas need industry and jobs, but not at the expense of our children's' futures. I believe that it is up to our youngest citizens to take hold of their future. You have the right to ask questions of your elders, of your political leaders. You have the right to give your opinions to the editorial pages of our newspapers.
Certain people in the coal industry have been raping and plundering parts of Appalachia for several years. Did you know that over 450 mountains have been blasted away, countless rivers polluted and acres upon acres of animal habit destroyed? Did you also know that it has been kept hidden from the citizens of the United States? Why is this destruction not being discussed in the political campaigns? Ask your parents, your teachers, your elders why this is allowed to happen. Call your newspapers, or write them an email asking them why nothing is being done to protect your future. Educate yourselves, seek the truthful answers and don't believe everything you are told. You have the right to demand an honest accounting of every politician, and of every business person seeking to profit from your community. You do not have to be old enough to vote to get answers. You have to be persistent and organized.
