During the spring of 2006 Alicia Keys embarked on a journey to Africa that changed her life forever. During her month-long trip Alicia witnessed countless stories of people infected with HIV, who despite the odds, were overcoming personal hardships with astonishing bravery. Alicia, together with Keep a Child Alive, is now ever more galvanized in her commitment to publicly addressing the need for lifesaving drugs and ongoing care for these inspiring people.

Hey Alicia My name is Courtney and I watched your movie and I cryed!! I cryed and cryed and.... cryed my eyes out. When you sang at the end of the movie I cryed so hard beacuse I felt the pain of these woman and kids left to fend for themselves and to have no one to care for them, I cryed. I asked myself would if we were never brought to America and we were all in Africa and that was me, you our family and anybody, wouldnt you want someone to be there to help you, to guide you and let each and everyone know that tomorrow YES you are going to live because we are HERE to give you what you need. Im not going to give you my pity story but Im from Queens... the southside to be exact and I dont have the resources to go to Africa or to make a significant change like you do or someone who is "out there" or famous but Im going to HELP any way I can wether its donating my allowance or giving any extra change or saving my money to go to Africa myself!! In the 25 years since HIV AIDS was first identified as a disease, over 65 million people have become infected and over 25 million people have died of AIDS related causes. The epidemic has spread across the world and no country has been spared. Every day 8,000 people die from AIDS and 18,000 men and women are newly infected. The incidence of HIV AIDS is highest in Sub-Saharan Africa with the Caribbean second in line. Latest estimates show that almost 40 million people are living with HIV.
One of the saddest consequences of the disease is its impact on children. To put this in perspective, in Swaziland one in four households is headed by a child whose parents have died of AIDS. Sadly, there are already 14 million AIDS orphans in the world today. This is largely due to the fact that women are not only biologically more at risk than men but are also subject to high levels of sexual violence. Young women and adolescent girls are a high-risk category, but so are sex workers, injecting drug users and men who have sex with men. The spread of the disease is worsened by the realities of economic injustice, gender inequalities, homophobia and prostitution. These underlying social causes make HIV AIDS such a complex disease. All these factors have created taboos and stigmas that have to be challenged in order that HIV AIDS is "normalised" as a disease in order for it to be treated more effectively at all levels. The situation is already serious but if infection rates continue to escalate, the disease could pose a long term threat to human society.
