Conceived during a Seattle party in 1987, Alice in Chains ascended to stardom by advancing the 1990s grunge scene alongside Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, despite lying sonically closer with heavy metal and hard rock. Dark, intense, and harrowingly introspective, Alice in Chains offers a bleak portrait of life’s most unspoken afflictions. And yet still, the band has always maintained a distinct melodiousness which propels them far beyond the confines of genre, reaching an audience as wide-ranging as their music’s themes are universally relevant. The result of this unique appeal is clear, having sold more than ten million albums worldwide and gathering six Grammy nominations. The band suffered the tragic death of singer Layne Staley in 2002, but their legacy remains as leaders of a rare breed of heavy metal bands worthy of critical acclaim while staying true to their down-tuned, nihilistic base. 2005 saw the newest stage of the band, introducing vocalist William DuVall and bringing Alice in Chains to a whole new generation of fans.

Combining equal parts heavy riffs and delicate acoustic sounds, Alice in Chains forged a unique angry, tortured sound that put them at the forefront of Seattle's early-'90's grunge bands. Vocalist Layne Staley and guitarist Jerry Cantrell (often singing in a brooding, close vocal harmony), along with drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr signed to Columbia Records in 1989 and released an EP and their debut Facelift well before the plethora of Seattle bands took over MTV. Following an appearance in the "grunge scene" film Singles, their second album Dirt debuted at number one, cementing Alice in Chains as one of the most important and popular bands of their generation. Their subtle yet angry acoustic EP Jar Of Flies followed, which showed an entirely different side of the band, also debuted at number one and proved that grunge didn't have to be loud to be powerful. In 1995, they released their self-titled album. This album was followed with a limited number of select gigs including their famed MTV Unplugged) performance.
In April of 2002, lead singer Layne Staley passed away at his Seattle home. Many believed that this tragic event officially ended the band. However, in February of 2005, the surviving members of Alice reunited on a Seattle stage for CARE tsunami benefit concert. This event marked a new chapter in the history of Alice in Chains, one that would see them decide to honor their musical legacy by taking their beloved songs on the road in 2006. With the help of William DuVall on vocals, the band toured Europe, Japan and launched a major North American tour.
After a hugely successful tour with their friends Velvet Revolver the guys are taking a much needed vacation...more to come soon.
In the meantime, satisfy your need for Alice with The Essential Alice in Chains, a definitive 2 CD overview of the band's entire career. Included are hits, fan favorites, Unplugged tracks and soundtrack rarities. The Essential Alice in Chains paints a beautifully detailed portrait of one of the most beloved bands of our time.
