About me:
ACADEMIC TITLES
Alessandro De Maddalena (Milan, 1970) is Doctor in Natural Sciences, graduated at the Università degli Studi di Milano, Facoltà di Scienze Matematiche, Fisiche e Naturali (Milan, Italy) in the academic year 1996-1997 with a Thesis on the specimens of great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) preserved in the Italian museums of Natural History and the presence of this species in the Mediterranean Sea.
ACTIVITIES
Research
Alessandro De Maddalena's main research subjects are: white shark biology and occurrence in Mediterranean Sea, shark morphology, shark fishery, shark specimens preserved in European museums of Natural History.
Alessandro De Maddalena is the Curator of the Italian Great White Shark Data Bank, research program that has been initiated in 1996 to fill the several gaps in our knowledge of ecology and distribution of Carcharodon carcharias in the Mediterranean Sea. The work that followed permitted to collect substantial information about historical and recent records of this species from the Mediterranean, realizing a database that has no precedent for specificity and completeness. Works based
on the data collected in this program are regularly published in scientific journals.
Alessandro De Maddalena is also a Member of the Mediterranean Shark Research Group, founded by himself with Lovrenc Lipej (Marine Biological Station of Piran, Slovenia), Joan Barrull and Isabel Mate (Barcelona Museum of Zoology, Spain) in 2000. This group was created as an initiative to promote a web of information exchange between ichthyologists who study sharks of the Mediterranean Sea, in a perspective of complete collaboration.
Alessandro De Maddalena is the President and a Founder Member of the Italian Ichthyological Society. The Society was created in order to promote diffusion of Ichthyology through courses, lectures, meetings, exhibitions, preparation of multimedial material, acquisition and conservation of publications, Ichthyological and marine-biological specimens, conduct research programs and collaborating to researches conducted by other scientific Institutions, promote collaboration between ichthyologists.
Alessandro De Maddalena collaborates with the Global Shark Attack File (GSAF) as a regional investigator for the
Mediterranean Sea. GSAF's quantitative data is available to the medical profession, the scientific community, the media and the public to provide accurate and current data on the subject of shark/human interactions.
Scientific illustration
Alessandro De Maddalena is one of Europe's foremost marine wildlife illustrator. He produced more than 900 drawings and paintings of sharks and cetaceans. His illustrations have appeared in many international wildlife magazines, scientific journals, books and the originals have been exhibited in various private galleries and scientific institutions including the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, Civic Aquarium of Milano, Nausicaa Aquarium of Boulogne-sur-Mer, World Festival of the Underwater Image of Antibes Juan-Les-Pins, Philippines Whale Shark Museum.
Non-specialist publications, talks and exhibitions
Alessandro De Maddalena is also the author of numerous non-specialist articles about sharks. His articles have appeared in many international wildlife magazines, such as The World and I, Dive New Zealand, Dive Pacific, Airone, Quark, Eurofishmarket, Il Pesce, Rivista Marittima, Mondo Sommerso, Aqva, Biologie in unserer Zeit, Océanorama, Apnéa, Plongeurs International, Unterwasser, Tauchen, Duiken, Enviromagazín. He has also been a consultant to other magazines including National Geographic Italia (the Italian edition of National Geographic), Immersed and Focus. He has given talks on sharks at various institutions in Italy, including the Natural History Museum of Milan, Natural History Museum of Genoa, Natural Sciences Museum of Brescia, Civic Aquarium of Milan, University of Milan, Italian Ichthyological Society, WWF oasis Le Foppe, University of Nice Sophia Antipolis and Wildaid's press conference in Rome. He has been featured as a shark expert in various television programs (RAI and MEDIASET). He has organized the exhibitions "Gli squali tra arte e scienza", at the Civic Aquarium of Milan, and “Alla ricerca del grande squalo bianco - Una mostra tra scienza e avventura”, with Vittorio Gabriotti, at
the Sala Civica of Castenedolo, Brescia, Italy, that has been a huge success.
