singing - i mean JAMMING - especially powwow and other songs i can put my heart into... i've got a wamp crew (black brook represent!) who are starting to get their skills tight. we'll be hitting some local powwows in the coming few... teaching and chilling with the neighborhood youth (they keep me young). making a difference in my community. passionate people. hiking + running. biking. SWIMMING and body surfing (i'm ill on the waves!). fishing. karate (shorin ryu). writing. going to powwows. drum hopping. 49'n. revolution. nation building. sports. playing basketball. living a balanced life. avoiding stress. the pej when it's needed. real people (crazier the better). oh yeah, and women (also the crazier the better)! i'll try just about anything at least once (within reason!). i try to keep an open mind to new ideas and ways of looking at the world + am interested in people of similar mind set.
me and the black brook singers were recently featured in a docutunes series about the island music scene: http://www.docutunes.com/blog/

Television
i try to avoid it, but it constantly catches me under its spell... heroes is the only show that i seem to watch on a regular basis lately. me and some folks even have made a full monday night of getting together and watching the new episodes! it's rad. i also love south park, as well as the daily show and colbert report. will always watch any local pro sports teams, especially the celtics, red sox and patriots. i watch a lot of history channel, cnn and sportcenter at times too.

About me: nutusuwees durwood. nuwtomas ahqunahut napeeut. my name is durwood. i'm from aquinnah on the island of martha's vineyard. i'm learning my language and like to practice it when i can.
i am a singer, mostly of southern style powwow songs, but also can rock out eastern and northern style. i'm fascinated with song and the power of the voice. its my medicine and incredibly powerful and i enjoy talking with people who understand this. i sing in the shower and jam across the land! i’ve been making my own songs too and am reestablishing what will be a strong singing tradition for my people for years to come. i'm also a councilman for the aquinnah wampanoag tribe and work for the tribe as a grant writer and community planner. i carry the weight of my people on my back and have a vision of us becoming strong and like-minded again someday.
i don't like to use capitals unless i have to. :)
what more... i’m a tall, skinny, light skinned, baldheaded, beard-sporting ndn. i don’t think most people know quite what to make of me. i hang out with my family, cousins and other relations most of the time. we rock out and are celebrities wherever we go, or at least we try to carry ourselves that way (pretty much cause the girls are gorgeous). i’m not a snob or anything, i’m just kinda shy and am quiet as all hell 99% of the time, but am always observing and analyzing. maybe i’m thinking about how retarded everyone is around me, or even how cool folks are too, or maybe i’m just daydreaming about this or that, i don’t know. i think by choosing my words carefully, it’s more effective when i do speak. sometimes, though, i throw out all my reasoning and say fuck it, les go for it! i still have trouble finding the right words and have been writing a lot to understand myself better. i’m pretty good at seeing the big picture and like to philosophize on occasion. i like to watch people. i like to read on the can and am ever appreciative of my buddy mchizzy for educating me on the secrets of selecting good reading materialsTM. i probably say "badass, "NICE", and "ya know?" too much. i love to laugh and am best off watching comedy movies as i tend to crack up at inopportune times during serious flicks and will yell at the screen on occasion... i try to be humble, but also am vain and like to show off when i have the chance... i really dig chicks wearing big hoop earrings. yeah. big hoops are super HOTTT.
You Are Lightning
Beautiful yet dangerous
People will stop and watch you when you appear

In his reign, he shackeled and chained killed, raped and enslaved. pero para nosotros -antepasados y espiritus, -muertos y vivos, -viejo y joven, los indios, las indias de la lucha, ellos no pueden matar porque somos fuerte juntos para la paz el unico esfuerzo que no sufra en vano no merecemos el dolor de su reinado, sin dignidad. pero no queremos su permiso o su aceptacion. porque en mis ojos hay ninos de los generaciones de siete pasado y lo de siete que van a ganar... van a crear un sueno que puede ver, un futuro para la alma no hace duro. por eso con todo lo que usted tiene adentro y afuera, de cuerpo y corazon -lucha, respeto y paz, recuerdan los que quisieron un mundo de valor y verdad.
In 1492 Colombus sailed the ocean blue... got lost, landed on the islands surrounding the Americas, enslaved, murdered, raped & diseased the indigenous peoples and now is revered throughout the united states. but let's remember those who suffered, strived, survived, let's remember those souls who still seek justice, peace and equality for they have yet to see the day that their death was not in vain.
