Our main interest is in providing a safe place where we can happily be ourselves, while sharing and learning from each other how to get the most out of life, living transgendered in southern North Carolina.
Movies
A nice gender primer:
Please suggest your favorite movies, like...
Better Than Chocolate
TransAmerica
To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar
Southern Comfort
Normal
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Television
I know this is a hard one, but what on TV inspires you?
Shows:
TransGeneration, on Bravo/Logo
Ugly Betty (the Alexis character)
Episodes from...
Big Shots (Katherine Moening plays an MTF)
Law and Order (beautiful T prostitute)
A little current events from TV that's worth thinking about . . .
Lawrence King often came to school dressed as a girl, with jewelry and makeup, so it may have been more a transgirl thing than a gay thing, per se, but it's still a damn good message for all of us.
Books
Books we can recommend:
She's Not There, by Jennifer Finney Boylan
Trans Sister Radio, by Christopher Bohjalian
The Riddle of Gender, by Deborah Rudacille
Suits Me: the Double Life of Billy Tipton, by Diane Wood Middlebrook
Sex Changes - Transgender Politics, by Patrick Califia
About me: Do you have gender issues, live in or around Wilmington, NC, and don't know where to turn for support? Now you do.
We are a safe, friendly gathering of open and like-minded individuals who meet once a week to support, inspire, talk, listen, and socialize. In this discrete venue you are as normal and accepted as any other human being, regardless of your gender identification.
Come join us and help us decide how best to serve your needs. At this time we are still small, but hope to grow as word gets out, and we are very open to input regarding all aspects of what we'd like to do at our gatherings.
Ideas to date include:
Making new friends (of course)!
Discussing problems and finding solutions.
Exploring how we can support the Wilmington area.
Including supportive partners and friends.
General socializing.
Potlucks and bar-b-ques.
Watching movies (gender related or just fun).
Going out to eat (at a friendly place)?
(Your ideas are most welcome.)
To Join Our Group:
The meetings are moderated by our friendly neighborhood therapist, Nova Swanstrom, MA LPA, who will be lightly screening participants to keep the meeting place discrete and the attendees as safe as possible.
Please give Nova a call at Delta, 910-343-6890.
Who I'd like to meet: Anyone with a need or desire for a safe, supportive and friendly place where their gender identification is celebrated, rather than discouraged by unfortunate social misunderstandings.
CAST of SUPPORTING CHARACTERS:
Here's an ever-growing list of people, businesses and links that we have found especially supportive. If you've found one, please let us know!
Hope we can all hang again soon. All my days are going to run together in a while but hopefully July will open up some possibilities for hanging out. I know Von will keep me updated.
