   About The Brakes

The Brakes - Tale of Two Cities Video

BIO

The Brakes are a genuine rock and roll band at first glance. However given a closer look, elements of folk, jazz and even post-rock reveal themselves, making their sound a distinct intertwining of American music, held together by insightful lyrics and memorable songs. Their musicality shines through as the members switch instruments, trading guitars, basses and keyboards for trumpets and saxophones. The band's success is evident in the range of acts that this band has shared the bill with: Dave Matthews Band to The Hold Steady, Live to Willie Nelson & John Fogerty.

This past spring, their diverse talents were highlighted when the band took on dual city residencies, performing weekly in New York City and Philadelphia. Inhabiting The Knitting Factory in NYC every Tuesday and at Milkboy in Ardmore, PA every Thursday, the band effortlessly transitioned from famed NYC rock club to intimate listening room, often times re-arranging their songs for each different setting.

These historic performances were captured on record with the help of Milkboy Recording's Tommy Joyner (Gomez, The Dixie Hummingbirds). The album entitled "Tale of Two Cities" will be released on HYENA records May 6th!

Next week, Mangold Entertainment and Coffee East are proud to announce their first ever National Emerging Artist Showcase. We are running the shows as part of a little mini-festival next Wednesday and Thursday so we don't interfere with your Memorial Day plans. These acts are up and comers, and should not be missed if you are looking for a great way to kick off your Memorial Day Weekend. Each of these acts are in my top friends on MySpace, so go check 'em out, and see which ones you would like to see. We are lucky to get each of these acts - Carney, for example is playing at Bonnaroo this year. Anyway, $10 gets you in Wednesday, $13.50 Thursday...pay $20 and get tickets for both nights...with five acts that’s $4 a band! And as always, for those of you that are 21, we will be featuring our now famous $12 Red Stripe bucket. If you aren’t 21, you can still come out and enjoy the shows. See you there!

I knew Matt and met the band when the Brakes first formed and I have seen them grow and become what they are today. I was very sorry to learn of your loss of a great drummer. I guess the fact that the new CD came out today is a tribute and an honor to Josh, one that he will take with him to his next life. Sending healing energy and condolences to the band, their friends and Josh's family. May the music help you heal.

We had the pleasure of having Josh sit in for us one night in Morrisville, PA a few years back when we were "between drummers". What a great talent, what a great loss. Our condolences go out the The Brakes family and Josh's family.

Please enjoy The BRAKES' "Younger Days" and "Supermarket" . These songs were recorded live in the Y-Rock On XPN studios on 5/20/07 for Y-Rock Philly Local's LOCAL TRACKS SESSIONS. These songs are posted now for a limited time on the Y-Rock Philly local myspace site at
www. myspace. com/Y-RockOnXPNLocalMusicShow

Our thoughts go out to The Brakes, and Joe's family and friends at this time.

Although Joe wasn't with part of the session with his band mates in our studio, maybe this is our tribute to the music he helped to create.

Enjoy the tunes of the Brakes.
