Alive with soulful longing, passionate hope, and vivid imagery, the music of Sharon Knight is a journey into the otherworldly mists of a timeless land, filled with brave heroes, epic love, and mythical quests. For more than 10 years, the San Francisco Celtic songstress has been performing and recording her unique musical vision as both a solo artist and fronting the world-rock fusion band Pandemonaeon. Her voice is strong and soulful, with a hint of vulnerability, and her striking poetry is set to lush instrumentation reminiscent of Loreena McKennitt’s work. Sharon has also been favorably compared with Fairport Convention, Stevie Nicks, and Tori Amos.
Sharon has recently released her fifth recording, titled Song of the Sea, a collection of original and traditional Celtic songs which sweeps the listener along on an enthralling musical journey. Featuring lyrical tales of muses and sirens, magical spells, pirates, phoenixes and otherworldly heroes, Song of the Sea evokes the indomitable spirit of the Celts and reminds us that we can all see the world through the eyes of enchantment.
In live performances, Sharon entertains with heartfelt passion and quirky humor, looking like an elegant emerald faery, dressed in green lace and velvets, with masses of flaming curls tumbling past her shoulders. Singing and playing her mandola, Sharon’s time-crafted live sets are a captivating blend of haunting ballads, lively jigs and reels, and Celtic-inspired originals. For a lush sound, she is backed by a clan of accomplished musicians, featuring such instrumentation as guitar, violin, mandocello, tin whistle, Uilleann pipes, bodhran, dumbek, oud, bass and drums. For more intimate occasions she is joined solely by accomplished guitarist and long-time collaborator Winter. Sharon has performed at such venues as the Sebastopol Celtic Festival, The Great American Music Hall, Slim’s, the Mystic Theater, Black Point Renaissance Faire, FaerieWorld Festival, Oregon Country Faire, Heartland Festival in Kansas, Pantheacon, Ancient Ways festival, as well as numerous harvest fairs, pubs and cafes.
Sharon’s musical journey contributes to the legacy of fine musicians and storytellers who, throughout time, have preserved and nurtured the Celtic folk soul. She is passionate about creating a contemporary interpretation of an ancient art form, thus bringing the spark of Celtic inspiration into modern times. Romantic and fanciful, but with enough grit to give it punch, Sharon’s music makes folkloric preservation cool.
