One at a Time: A Week in an American Animal Shelter

About me: The Portsmouth Humane Society, Inc. is a private, 501(C)(3) Animal Shelter dedicated to assisting our community by caring for and placing as many adoptable pets into good homes as possible.
We are one of the longest serving animal welfare groups in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a history reaching back to the early 1900's.
We not part of the Portsmouth City Government, however we are the contracted animal shelter for the City of Portsmouth and we work closely with Portsmouth City Officials for the welfare of the animals in our city.
Each year, the Portsmouth Humane Society takes in thousands of pets and they come from owners who no longer wish to keep them (owner-surrenders), are found wandering the streets by citizens and Portsmouth Animal Control Officers as well as those that are seized by Animal Control Officers in cruelty or neglect cases. Many times, the courts award custody of the animal to our shelter and we try to find a new home for it. We get a lot of great pets and need committed volunteers and adopters to help us find homes for as many as we can.
In everything we do, from welcoming a litter of kittens or puppies into the world, protecting a homeless or abused pet, nursing a sick or pet back to health, adopting a new pet to a responsible owner or, ending the suffering of an animal suffering from a catastropic illness or injury, we will always act in the best interest of the pet.
