Influences
Michael Chabon, Explosions In The Sky, Idlewild (I mean really, that 100 Broken Windows record is good, really good, to the point of being embarassingly so), Bjork, the Martin Scorcese film about Dylan (wow, wasn't he good?), iLiKETRAiNS, Low, My Bloody Valentine, Jeniferever, Philip Roth, Graham Swift, Jaga Jazzist, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, BBC News 24 (610 on the remote, learn it, store it away, repeat the headlines over and over until they're true), Mono, Jane's Addiction, Pixies, Sigur Ros, Tool, Susannah and the Magical Orchestra, Boxhead Ensemble, Bill Evans, that T.S Eliot line about stillness at the turning point of the earth, Led Zeppelin, Mogwai, Jeff Buckley, Elbow, Mars Volta, Aphex Twin, John Coltrane, girlfriends who tidy your room while you're out at work, girlfriends who take pictures, At The Drive In, Anything on Anticon Records, Red House Painters, Patti Smith, bands we sound nothing like: they're the real signs of a band, surely? surely? surely.
Sounds Like
"It becomes clear that the press on this band is misleading and the harder, rockier edge of both Fell City Girl and Oxford begins to make itself felt." - New Noise
"Fell City Girl have their sights set on a higher plain than many of their contemporaries...the sound of an unmastered Jeff Buckley recording receiving the full makeover of a Muse sized skyscraper" - Drowned In Sound
rafted around a main frame of brooding intensity, Fell City Girl deliver the desperately delicate passion of Jeff Buckley with a slight hint of Muses' post rock pop, creating songs that careen gracefully from whispered intimacy to epically wailing crescendos effortlessly and perfectly - Room Thirteen
Fell City Girl emerged from Oxford amidst deafening noise and epic soundscapes, to much acclaim. Raised on a diet of Sigur Ros, Mogwai, early Verve, and Bjork, the band make post-rock pop songs that soundtrack the last pages of their favourite books.
At once a post-rock band, the next minute, a pop band, Fell City Girl are trying to break your heart. Post rock died a long time ago: this is the sound of a band working out where it goes next, gloriously out of step with anyone else around them. "I spend my days hiding in corners of bookshops reading the last sentences of books and I spend my nights hiding in the corners of rehearsal rooms trying to make the soundtrack to what I've read that day" explains singer Phil McMinn. This is the sound of old film stars, of a world seemingly tearing itself apart, of illegal wars and of protest struggling to be heard amidst the voices of leaders intent on bringing devastation to all four corners of the globe.
In the last two years Fell City Girl have opened the Carling Reading and Leeds weekends, supported Longview on a UK tour, sold out the 500 capacity Zodiac in Oxford three times in 12 months, watched as over 200 people turned up for their Virgin Megsatore Instore show, put out two long since sold out releases, 7" single 'Weaker Light' on Nomadic and their debut Lavolta Records EP 'Swim', played with Explosions in the Sky, Four Tet, The Zutons, The Cooper Temple Clause, and (not forgetting) the mighty Girls Aloud. The new single 'February Snow' (Lavolta Records) was picked up by both Jonathan Ross and Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 2, BBC 6Music, and playlisted by XFM.
Fell City Girl's new EP 'February Snow' was out on Oct 23rd on Lavolta Records and was recorded in studios country-wide and is strictly limited to 500 7" and 500 CD's.
I only discovered Fell City Girl recently when I picked up the February Snow EP at an indie record shop. Loved it, and love the other songs on here. So I do hope this is not the last we shall hear of this band - there is a kind of shimmering beauty to these songs which is very special and really deserves to be heard.
