Badal Roy was born in India and he arrived in New York in 1968 with a pair of tablas and eight dollars in his pocket. Soon he received his big break: an invitation to record with John McLaughlin and Miles Davis successively. Badal went on to record on Miles Davis's albums On the Corner, Big Fun, Agartha, Pangaea and others. He was one of the first Indian musicians to effectively meld Indian music and instruments with jazz and funk. Today Badal Roy is the foremost exponent of tabla in jazz music. He has played with not only Davis and McLaughlin, but also artists as diverse as P-Funk, Herbie Mann, Dave Liebman, Don Cherry, Pharaoh Sanders, Dizzy Gillespie, Lonnie Liston Smith, Andreas Vollenweider, and Yoko Ono. He has been an integral part of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time since 1988 and is presently collaborating with Brazil s Duofel, an instrumental guitar duo. Badal is also a key member of Michael Wolff's Impure Thoughts as well as a part of the Miles Davis alumni band Children On The Corner. Badal is currently in production on a project with drummer Mike Clark, producer/dj Kentyah and others. For more, see Badal's Myspace page.

Hello Badal and Dharma Jazz combo, greetings from Jon Hammond on West Side Manhattan...great to see you on the Space, many thanks for the Add-On! I went to hear you one time Badal with Michael's group at the Cutting Room...after a wonderful intro you did, then the group came in and I could no longer hear you sadly for the entire rest of the set. Mike's band had almost no dynamics happening which was a shame because you sounded fantastic until the ensemble buried your wonderful sound and subtle rhythms.
I just came back from watching LOVE GURU for the 3rd time, 3-days-in-a-row because I am playing Hammond organ on the soundtrack of the movie. It is my very first major motion picture soundtrack for the folks at Paramount Pictures. Very funny movie! My co-producer Joe Berger came with me this evening, he enjoyed it immensely. I am on mornings on the Big 1550 KYOURADIO HammondCast Show. Today I have Anton Fig on the show from David Letterman / Paul Shaffer CBS Orchestra. Keep up the great work Badal and Dharma Jazz combo! Sincerely, Jon Hammond http://ascap. com/network/audioportraits/Jon_Hammond_Rent/ *Member AFM Local 802, Local 6 / ASCAP Publisher
