In the the 80s, Exit either loved or despised programmed music. The sound of a drum machine could make him nuts. It was hit or miss, when Prince's Purple Rain came out, it was a personal favorite and was certainly quite electronic sounding. In contrast, Elton John's 'I Don't Want to Go on with You Like That' was one that couldn't be tolerated. One of the largest musical influences was the wide variety of music that would be played on the Dr. Demento show. Every week, this radio program would feature odd music by a variety of artists, both national acts (Ramones, The Who, The Timelords, Kronos Quartet, Screamin' Jay Hawkings) and bedroom recording artists. 
It wasn't until 1989 when his sister brought some of the influences that would shape all things to come. That year, two major releases came out: Ministry's 'The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste' and Nine in Nails 'Pretty Hate Machine'. Exit had his mind insantly smashed open with the song 'So What'. As Exit put it, "The sound was so crisp and clear. The laughing sample was so clean you could hear the weeze of the man's voice all on top of the music that was playing." 
99¢ Special first took form in 1991, prior to having a name. Exit had found a Commodore 64 program that was a low tech drum machine and began using it to provide a structure to his unstructured guitar playing. Around this time, he also began DJing at a college radio station playing Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Die Warzau, Spit, and various others. 
With these influences, which were brought on thanks to his personal ties to DJ Rexx Arkana, he began composing and recording songs under the name 'Autofactor'. This name was a temporary 'working title', and it wasn't until a college mate stole a roll of orange flourencent 99¢ special stickers that the name took hold. 
Keeping with his love of Commodore computers, he migrated to the much more advanced Amiga 500 and using a tracking program and a sampler, a burst of songs were written from 1992 until 1994. During the first public performance in December of 1992, Exit and his close friend Matt Lundy pummeled pipes, made noise, and handed out melted fudge pops. In attendance was Darren Blunt, who previously was involved in a tribal/noise event under the name 'Peter Luxury'. He offered to drum for 99. 
Many months went buy as Exit continued to write music and aquire junk instruments, fitting to the name 99¢ Special. Darren ran in to Exit at a local bar and the two began the journey that led to performing 62 shows in 9 different states in two years time with various acts such as Tommie Griggz, Bile, Evil Mothers, 16 Volt, Punch Drunk Monkeys (with Crappy the Clown), Flashing Astonishers, Canine Christ, Incantation, Nothingface, and Abalienation. 
Due to the volitile nature of being in a band, the death of a close friend of the band, and countless other stresses, they disbandded in late 1996. The original cast reunited in 1999 and has since been reforming internally to make it possible to go beyond anything they have ever done before. 
Currently, Exit is working on recording new material which has been 'in theory' over the past 10 years. One such example of the expanded sound of 99 is the newest demo recording of 'Again' which features Exit playing violin and actually 'singing' as opposed to screaming. Do keep an ear to the wall, there is a rumble inside the room next door!

333	Jun 29 2007 9:02 AM I've been doing goth/triphop/dark ambient as Procryptik and glitch/techno/industrial as Zombie Process, although the stuff I have up now is a few years old. The links are on my profile, as is SpiritTrap noise stuff from the early 90s. I just started playing with Live, am looking into adding a guitarist - or at least sampling one - and should be playing ZP out in the fall.

Jane will mark her "debut" as an official member of the Nightmare this Saturday, January 6th at the Half Penny Pub in the Nightmare's hometown in Syracuse, NY. Jane is no stranger to the Nightmare having fronted her former band Haunted By Angels that struck up a lasting friendship between both bands, which lead to the Nightmare having Jane appear as a guest vocalist on their forthcoming album, "Tragically Ever After". After Jane parted ways with Haunted By Angels, the Nightmare invited her to appear onstage with them providing guest vocals which she accepted at a Halloween show this year. After a few gigs of "guest appearances" Jane and the rest of the Nightmare decided to join forces on a permanent basis. The New Year is already shaping up to be full of great things for Zadoc...& the Nightmare, and we're proud to have Jane Evil on board for the ride.
