| Electronic SubSouth: General Info
|
| Member Since | 3/18/2005 | | Band Website | ElectronicSubSouth.com | | Band Members | FEATURED MUSIC PLAYER SONGS ARE TEMPORARILY ON LOAN WITH PERMISSION. | | Influences | We are looking for musicians who compose and perform: 8-Bit, Big Beat, Bliss-Out, Drill 'N' Bass, Electroclash, IDM, Industrial, Nu-Electro, Synthpop, Synthpunk, and/or Weirdoid Electronica.
In addition to the music, we also encourage a "look" and/or stage presence that will compliment an act's electronic sound. If not, then at least another aspect which is performance-based, such as: an accompanying dance troupe, a puppet show, random theatrics, an interesting stage set-up, unique instruments or other devices, a science fiction theme, costumes and trans-gendered make-up, etc. After all, it is supposed to be a "performance", right? Why not collaborate with some non-musical artists?
Hacknied and boring things to watch are: musicians wearing t-shirt & jeans, commercially available videos/movies being played/projected, musicians crouched over a borrowed bar table, motionless laptoppers "checking their email", etc. Not to say that we will necessarily turn any performer down; these are just preferential suggestions.
| | Sounds Like | These are some electronic musicians who inspire what we're trying to showcase in terms of composition, performance, and/or visual style:

| About Electronic SubSouth |
|
Electronic SubSouth represents a Florida-specific electronic music movement, so if you are not a fan or musician based in Florida, we'll most likely deny you as a "friend" (the same goes for any non-electronic music acts). No offense... we're focused soley on the proliferation and networking of Florida's electronic music scene. To find out more of what we're all about, please check our offical page:
Gainesville, Florida has got a great music scene, but if you want something that doesn't involve the guitar/bass/drums/vocals combo then you're pretty much out of luck. My main musical genre of interest is electronic music, but no bands of that ilk ever come here and the local promoters don't really seem to put any effort into bringing them down. I remember driving to Gainesville during the late 80's and early 90's to see Industrial and IDM bands play... but then what happened? There was also a local Noise and IDM scene in the late 90's, but that just kind of disappeared too.
I decided in April 2004 that it really only takes one person to organize a "scene", and with the help of some friends that's what I've set out to do.
The purpose of the events are to showcase various genres of beat-driven compositional electronic music: 8-Bit, Big Beat, Bliss-Out, Drill 'N' Bass, Electroclash, IDM, Industrial, Nu-Electro, Synthpop, Synthpunk, and/or Weirdoid Electronica. Musicians who use mainly electronic instruments, and performance/image based acts are what we're focused on.
We are specifically steering clear of guitar-heavy Bliss-Out, Dance/Club, DJs, Dub, Hip-Hop, Hip-Hop IDM, House, beatless Glitch, rolling drumline/cymbal crash-heavy Goth/EBM/Trance Industrial, guitar-heavy Industrial/Darkwave, mc-driven Jungle/Drum 'N' Bass, Musique Concrete, improvised Noise, Nu Metal, R&B, boring repetitive Techno, Trance, and acts that use mainly traditional Rock instruments (ie: if your band has one or more guitarists, with keyboards serving soley as a rhythm or backing instrument, you are not an electronic or Synthpop band). Those scenes are already well-established and we desperately want something new here in Florida. Miami has and organized electronic music scene, but not with as broad a range of genres as what we're trying to bring together.
These shows are organized under the name of ElectronicSubSouth.com (ESS). "SubSouth" refers to Florida mainly, being that we are below the "South" and becoming a much different state than any above us. Miami seems too far away and exclusive (sadly, they rarely ever share their scene with the rest of Florida), so we're focusing on acts from Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Gainesville, Orlando, Tampa, St. Pete, Clearwater, etc. The shows will most likely end up being here in Gainesville, but we at least would like to network with folks in the other towns.
The future goal of ElectronicSubSouth.com is to eventually create enough interest in electronic music that the local promoters and venues will once again be willing to bring in national and international electronic music acts.
